Three years ago only _*L_ few in the inner circle' knew anythlngi about it. hutthsse few- were piling up fortunes. The great pioneer whose name will go down to posterity ns- sociatcd with those of Farraday,Step- hennon and Edison is the Hon; _Charles Dalton. Mr. Dalton was a yeoman -farmer of Irish descent oc- cupying his own land at Tlgnlsh in the extreme west of the Island. As a youth he was fonder of hunting and shooting than following the plow, and it was while he was so cn- gaged. the idea first struck him of domesticating the fox for the sake of its fur. The pelts of the foxes he shot always fetched good pricesin the English market, and Mr. Dalton ln- qliired at his agents what were the characteristics which attracted the experts in their selections. He found that the skins he sent were longer in. hair and firmer in the underwool, than those obtained from other sources; .while the black sheen was linaq-ualled for its lustre( Thesaquall- ties are worth developillg. -B810 MY- llaltoh to himself, and so set out to study the ways and habits of Mr. and Mrs. Rcynard in their natural habitat. The experts. in London agreed with the scunitists,- so lt was up to Mr. Delfuu to prove -that scientists and experts were wrong--or to lose his regllllf income, _far the wild animal had been almost eaihpletely exterminated. This change was adopted by a vote of 16 against 12, some of the committee- men arguing that cavalry had become less necessary owing to the develop- ment of aviation and the virtual abo- lition of cavalry charges. A further motive for the reduction of this nrm of the service was dd- vauced by one member, who declared that the officers of cavalry regiments were snobbish. ‘ The bill was erroneously reported to have been voted in entirety yester- iay, whereas only that part of the ensure dealing _with tne increased peace footing" of existing infantry re- iments and the raising of addition- l units had been adopted.
