CURRENT NOTES. Mr. Trevelyan, Chief Secretary for Ire- land, stated that the Government intend d to abolish the office of special resident magistrates in Ireland Patrick O'Brien, Michael Hynes and Patrick Slater, arrested for printing and forwarding threatening circulars to trades men in Dablin, have been further remanded until Friday. The papal propaganda has issued a sup- plemental circular to the Trish bishops, en- forcing the previous injunction and con- taining answers to many priests who asked for advice on matters of conscience The propaganda will shortly issue a cirenlar quoting Cardinal Callen to show that Rome has always opposed seditious associations. In the British Commons, on the 21st instant, Mr. Porter, Attorney Genera! for Ireland, in reply to a question of Mr. Harrington, member for West Meath denied that Patrick Delaney, one of the Phosnix Park wurderers, had pleaded guilty because of a previous agreement that his life woald be spared if he would give evidence to crim- inate Timothy Kelly. Thomas Sexton, Member of Parliament for Sligo, in a speech at Dublin on the 20ch, referring to the Popo’s circular to the lrish clergy, said, the action of the Irish race ip relation thereto, would tend to the perman- ent good of the cause of religion. Sexton urged the avoidance of using words that would postpone a reconciliation which he was sure would soon be established on an honorable basis between the Vatican and the Irish people. In the year 1720, when George the First was King of England, one John Arbuthnot, a Tory wit, was the author of a drama en- titled, ‘‘History of John Bull,” a burlesque escount of the negotiations and wers of the Spanish Succession. From this satire arose the now familiar national name of ‘‘John Bull,” first given to the clothier who repzve- sented England in Arbuthnot’s burle:que. The Dutch nation was figured as ‘'Nic Frog,” the linendraper ; King Charles o1 Spain was Lord Strutt ; his French success or was Philip Baboon, and the great King Louis (the Fourteenth) himself appeared as Louis Baboon. A special correspondeat of the Boston Pilot at Rome, writing om May Sth says: ‘* A report circulated here, aud which pos- sibly spread to Anerica, to the effeet that the Archbishop of Cashe! had been smu- moned to Rome to be snbmitted to reproof for his conduct in regerd to the national movement in Ireland is whells devoid of found «tion. The fact of the matcer is that Monsignor Croke has been most courteously invited here as one whos: position and knowledge gives him specia! tacilities for knowing the condition of the Irish people. The statements that Arch- bisho» Croke will be received with distrust at the Propaganda and that possibly he might be denied an audience with the Pox a are wholly at variance with the truth. W-* have made arrangements with the best makers of Gas Stoves in the United States, which we will be able to sup- ply the public, at the lowest possible price. We have also agreed with the Gas Com- pany (fer the purpose of introducing these “toves), to sell the first fifteen (15) for which we may receive orders, At’ their Net Cost, LANDED HERE. TESTIMONIALS. The following are a few testimonials from a list of several hundred :— The capacity of the Stove 1s surprising. With a No. 8 Stove we cooked for a party of seven, giving them broiled oysters, steak, lamb chops, and baked biscuit, m 45 minutes, at a cost for gas of 4) cents. On another oceasion we gave a dinner in courses of twenty men, the bill of fare as follows : Broiled shad, beef steak, roast quarter of lamb, baked biscuit and coffee; heating the water for washing the dishes tour times, re-setting the table three times. All was accomplished in one hour and forty minates, at aa expense for gas of eleven ceuts. This work was all done ou one No. 8 tove. All were enthusiastic over the manner in which the oysters, fish and meats were ;nene had experienced any so tender, juicy. and of sach fuli flavor hefore. We cousider the stove a yvreat success, and m st complete in all its parts and arrapgements A. C. Woop, Supt. > CO me Ga I bought one of your No. 12 Gas Cooking S eves last September, for use in my restau- rant, and have used it ever since for baking, broiling and stewing. 1 cau say for it that it is always ready and des its werk rapidly; that there 1s no dust, no dirt, po surplus heat, as we are using only .hat portion that we need, and as soon as the article is cooked the gas is extinguished and ticre is mo waste. I think it will do the same amount of work at lers cost than coa, veu at the high price of gas. It takes much less room than a cual range that would do the same work. I am perfectly satisfied wih and w ald nut be without one for double the price. J.T. Harker. The Gas Stove yon sent me, I am glad t. say has proved an entire success. If my testimony is of any value to you, you are at liberty to use it, Ihe decreare in the coal bill more than offsets the increase in the sas ditto, The cooking is excellent and uni- form ip its operation. No dirt or du-t irritates the careful house- wife, and Mrs. 5. describes it as a *“‘ rea) treasure ”’ In my humble opinion, any man who really Wants to add to the number «f allott)d days f his better-half. bad by tter invest in a Gas stove and save her worry, and himself ex- pense, W. H. Srymorre, We are perfectly delighted with our Gas Stove. It gives entire satisiaction in every respect. Mrs M. Penyixoron, 2103 Vine St. Your favor of the Ist inst. was duly received asking my opinion of the Gas Cooking Stove bought last May, and in reply, would state that the satisfaction rendered by the stove was far beyond my expectations, and the work it will accomplish is marvelous, together with the small expense and comfort attending the same. Epwiy A Garett. Having used one of your No. 7 Gas Cooking Stoves for a considera le time past, it is with pleasure that I bear testimony to its g-nuine merits. It boils, bakes, broil, roasts, and in fact, does every thing ‘hata first class stove or range ean do, and witha saving of time and labor, that can only be appreciated by those who use them. It has given us the most entire satisfaction, and to use mv wife’s words, *‘I would rot be without it for ten times the cost.” From statements of our gas meter taken, we find it more economical than coal MERCER EK.
