John ll. 54. I want us to study this text this morn- 'ng in order if possible to clear away som- of the mists that hung around lt. I do noi ibject tomystlclsm pure and »imple, ioi religion could not be religion wiihcui -uors or less of it; but certain passages in Scripture not only seem to teach mystic- _ism butseem to Pc enswathed ina rnlsi of mystery. I think the passage which ive have for our text has a pr-rlounfl meaning and when its teaching is clearly understood lt can be translitcd int-t everyday life so as to help ustn come into closer touch with God and know mor. of His power to save. Before dealing with the text itself, thers are two or three things upon which it will be well for ua to rslruh our memories. In tha first placi- let ua remember that thsrs is no word in any language that has not ‘been coined to name somcqualitv. Drcpcrty. or slats ol matter. The wordstha grsmmarlans call nouns, are names cf things; the words they call verbs are names of states, rest, crmotion; propositions name relations, adjectives, qualities, and so on through tha eight parts of speech. But what I -vant you partlculariyto remember just now is the fact that orialnaliy every word either was a name of matter or some peculiarity of matter. I mean by matter that which we describe as having length, breadth and thickness. So today when we talk about mind or spirit we are com- pelled to use words originally coined to deni exclusively with matter, and if we srstcinik nbout Spirit at all we musi either coin a new set ol words or use the aid ones in a very diii'er~ nt sense from thnt which we give them when talking about matter, for whatever mind and _spirit may be in themselves we do no: i.‘iiuk about them ns possessing length, breadth slid thickness, and for this reason they mn 'bear no relation to time or space. We hnve not coined new wor a hut have taken theold cnesand used them in anew sense. To -llu-itrnte what Luiean, onks our Lord’= ~'-iyinir in tha Sermon on the Mount wha re He Isaid," “Blessed ari- they that hunger and thirst niter rlghi- eousness." Hunger and thlrstarc purely physicii states-thirst when reduc.d lo l's lust analysis is n lack of water in ih. nlood. This luck is mnde known to cons- anlnnsnsss by n system ol nerves acting on thelower palate and about tho root nl th.- tongue. Iiy these means we learn thm every libre of the system is mskinq rl - iuands upon the blood for that which it i~ unnbls to supply. Itls a craving ofthe whole physical system for waicr. We sae sn analogy between this physical craving. und tha longing of the soul for knowledge and we feel it no iuiprcpriety tc say tha' No are thlrsting for knowledge. But we iee also an analogy beiwecn the physical :md mental on one side und the yearning of our spiritual nature for communion with our iellewuien, for truth, lor holl- ness and Gnd. No one misundersiands Longfellow when he says of Evangeline, “Urged by that restless ionizing. the hun- ger and thirst of the Spirit." So you sec these old words have been carried right up into the region ol spirit and mari =to do service in a rerricn for which at first they hnd no meaning. In this region their meaning is forced upon them oy their surroundinus, or as the school- men would say, their context. Give us the full setting of the words and thc meaning may nn clearly understood even in this high figurative sense. We scarce- ly misunderstand one nnnlher when ua- ing language in this way in ordinary conversation. We lock into the speaker-'s eye, we sec his gestures, and interpret his languugs through all the words of his bring. Have you ever noticed in lis- tening io a epeaker how caralul hs is in the usa ol his words at the beginning oi the speech--svsry word used in its accur- ate sense. As he advances he and his audience become one lu common sympath- ies, he draws upon them and they are riinwing upon him. At lust they are fused into cnc common whole,-a common spirit pervades nil and becomes for the time a general interpreter. Under such conditions the speaker may use the most extravsgantiy iiguriitive languwe wlthouv. luar of being misunderstood. ’I‘h.s would nfc~_ssarily ba more or loss irus of J sus and ills :aufiiencr in the dimourses g von hy Him whilc hers on earth. Ha was oriental in His style and talked din-ctly to the multiiude. The multiludecould look into His face, sea ills gsrturss. see the emotion as it ached and flowed, manifutlngitulfln the sys snievury pan of I-Ile being. Thus its moaning ought to have been clearer to them as Ho carried lamrlsga up into those figuratives regions than lt- is to us when r.-duced io cold writing. Thlltadi then is s figurative language, drawn from the analogy of physical states and actions This being sc, we have to Interpret the text through these analogies. Lot ua new for li moment study the occasion that called forth the text. Our Lord was wsnry msd wanted rest., He and ills disciples takingsboat crossed over the into lrom Uapernnnm to the neighbor- hood of 'I'Iberins`on the other ride.
