Twelve hundred men_ are at work with this end in view but the architects contend that it will be a physical impossibility to have the building ready before the summer or fall of 1918. The predic- tion persists that the next two sessions of parliament will be held in the Vic- toria Museum. The contract will in- volve an expenditure of some $5_000, 000 the tower of the restored building will be entirely reconstructed and will be finished off on the plan of the Bri- tish House of Parliament instead of being rebuilt according to its former style. This is to be done at the spe- cial request of H. R. H. the Duke of Connaught. One whole storey will be added to the building and»will make it tive stories ill height all round. This will give instead of the 38 per cent. more accomodation originally planned, upwards of 75 per cent. more space than was available in the old building which was badly congested. ~_-_-_-_-_-_ _-r -J _-_-J -_-.-_-_».-,--_-_-_-_-C-C -.-V-_-_-.1 C-.-_-_-,~ ._... surhthis couhl ir sunhlrllsmr Verdict oi Gui-ity Found by Jury in Case oi ' Aclier and Miller. A representative oi’ the Guardian had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Hen- ry yesterday and by dint oi' questions elicited some interesting facts in con- nection with Mr. }ienry's career and tho affairs of Edmonton. Mr, Henry before leaving Charlottetown was a. drygoods clerk in the store of Messrs. Perkins & Sterns. ln 1890 he re- nloved to Western Canada. locating in Calgary. where he continued in the dry goods business. Three years later lle pulled up stakes at Calgary and went to Edmonton. where he started a clothing and general dry goods es- tablishment. He conducted this busi- ness for fifteen years and then sold Vout and went into the furniture busi- ness with a partner, establishing the firm of Blowey & Henry_ which has developed into one of the largest con- cerns of the kind in Western Canada. In 1901 Mr. Henry was elected a member of the City Council of Edmon- ton and his rise to the position of 'chief Magistrate of that flourilhing year for Edmonton. The Mayor' at that time was Mr. McNamara. who. upon a teprnicality, _was untreated. He. _ran again or the balance of the year, Mr. Henry being nominated to oppose him. The result of the election was a sweeping victory for Mr. Henry, whose majority was 6,000. Mayor Henry ran again in the 1015 election, his opponent being Joseph Adair, ‘a pro- minent newspaper man_ Again the Prince Edward Islander was victorious by about the same large maiorityaa before. In 1018 he bad the honor of being elected Mayor by acclamatton. Successful by The Guardian. pointed by the City Council. The Mayor is always a Commissioner. This year there was but one commissions ‘ ill addition to the Mayor as againlv tive last year. The result was to re tluce operating expences of all utili- ties by about $3,000 and to bring abort some changes which worked to the ad- vantage of the city. Edmonton il now pursuing a policy of restricted er- penditure and during the progress o` the war will not make any heavy out lay, the city in fact being well provi- ded to meet every colltin gency. Mr, Henry states that conditions in the West are fact assuming norm~l again and tho splendid crop of laef. year has had a great deal to do in res- toring confldence. The prospects are good for another bumper crop thi; year. Recruiting in the West. he aay=_ met with a very generous response. Edmonton contributing 18.000 men out of a population of 50,000. This is sail to be the finest record in the Empire Of this number a total of four hun- dred were civic employees. » Asked ___i_l_s to his impressions oi Charlottetown since leaving here lil 1890 Mayor Henry says that he sees quite a change in the appearance ci the city. , The large amount of pe"- lllallont sid_e_walk laid siovvll is the most striking change and thi improved con- dition of the streets is also quite no- ticeable. ” - ~ ' One little criticism ite inaltea is in lregard to the-'newii 'liotorw sprinkler which judging by the immense quan- tities of water dashed all over the streets, he considers a needless waste and expense.
