It is true that the harbor has been open for navi- gation later in the season, but there has in variably been cold weather and plenty of ice around either ia November or early in Dec ember.” Morrtvary Srartistics —For the follow- ing mortuary statistics «f the city of Char- lottetown, for the month of November, 1892, we are indebted to Dr. Johnson :— Number of deaths, 7; same month last year, 10. W. | Hyndinan returned from Halifax last even- | ing. These gentlemen went to Halifax as delegates from the Island Fire Insurance | Board to see what could be done in the! matter of the proposed increase in the rates of insurance ordered by the British oftices. | A conference was held in the Board Room | in that city on Tuesday and Wednesday, at | which there were present, besides the Island delegatee, representatives from the diffsrent English insurance companies doing business in Halifax and St. John, as well as a representative of the Eastern Insurance | Company. It is unierstood thst the rates through- | out the Island will probably be increased 50 per cent., end in some instances 75 per | cent’ The rate on isolated dwellings and | farm bui'dings will also be put up. There was a great battle over the rates for Charlottetown. Its eflicient water pro- | tection was pressed strongly, and the good | fire record of the past four years was also org d. Tae main objection to our system of water protec- | tion was that it has only one main pipe, and that any accident to that would leave! the whole city at the mercy of the flames. We understand that the increase in Char- lottetown will not be over 20 per cent. This is a material reduction from the 50°) percent. increase it was feared would be | puton. We trust that this action of the; Board of Conference wi!l be acceptable to ! the British agents in London. The s¢ par- ate menwria's seut from Halifax and Char- | lottetown put the case as strongly as pos- sible. The new rates will likely take effect on the lst January next. To Fight for Great Wealth. SAMUEL E CONTESTED, The Ccisputed will case in the estate of ; the late Samuel E. Sawyer, of Gloucester, | Mass., it is expected, will come up before Justice Charles E. Allen, of the Supreme Jud c al Court at Salem, on Wednesday. Next to the Searles will case, it is the} most important for many years. The | amount of property involved is about! $700,000. The vial will probably not take less than ten days in any case, and may consume nearly a month. The counsel for the contestants will be Gen. Beojimin F. Butler and Eugene Had- ley of Bwion. The defence will be con- ducted by Hon, Charles A. Russell, of Gloucester, and Elbridge T. Burley, ot Liwr nee, who was on the Searles will case. The will is to be disputed on the ground cf undue influence and insanity. The late Samuel Sawyer, testator of the ‘i pated will, was a resident of Fresh Water Cove, s small neighborhood between Gloucester proper and Magnolia, He was very fortunate in money matters, and ac- cumulated a large fortune, although the inventory of the estate showed a smaller amount of property than was before Mr ) Sawyer's death. | [: is said that Mr. Sawyer made his first bg strike by selling the farm which is now Franklin Park to the city of Boston for $350,000.
