Cleveland Remains One Game Ahead Of Yanks; Boston Still In Running (By The Canadian Press) Cleveland Indians remained one game in front of New York Yank- ees in the neck-and-neck Ani- erican League pennant race Thursday as the two front-run- nlng teams absorbed defeats. Washingtonls Bob Porterfield pitched a brilliant iihrce-hitter in a night game at Washington to defeat Cleveland 1-0. Virgil Trucks and Detroit Ti- gers dealt another blow to the bombers' pennant ambitions as they romped to a 9-2 triumph over the world champions. Beaten 18 straight times by the league's top three clubs and whip- ped in nine of their last 10 games, the Senators produced their only run off Bob Lemon in the third inning as the result of a two- base error by second baseman Bobby Avila. Avila permitted Irv Noren's hard grounder to get between his legs and when the ball trickled into oentrefield Noi-en legged it safely to second. Mickey Vernon. who accounted for ilhree of Wash- ington's 10 hits off Lemon. singled to score Noren. Porterfield walked four and struck out six. Trucks cruised to his 10th victory and 100th of his major league career as the Tigers jump- erl lefty Ed Lopat and Tom Mor- gain for seven runs in the fifth inning to asume a. 9-1 lead. Trucks also became the only pitcher to beat tibe Yanks four times this season. The loss was the Yanks third straight to a second-division clulb. The last place St. Louis Browns beat them twice Tuesday. Rookie Mickey Mantle blasted Ti-uck's first pitch of the game for a home run but the Tigers nicked Lorpat for single runs in the third and fourth innings to take a 2-1 advantage. The Yanks fell apart in the fifth. Steve Souchock. Jerry Priddy and Don Kolloway led off with successive singles. Bob Swift followed with a safe hunt and Trucks with a tlwo-run sin- gle to chase Lopat. Morgan ent- ered and fanned Johnny Lipon but George Kell kept the rally alive with a single and Vic Werlz clouted his 23rd homer to com- plete the scoring. The loss also endangered the Yanks' lead over the third-place Boston Red Sox. The Sox nipped the Browns. 5-4 in ten innings to pull to within 2 1-2 games of the Yanks. Dom DiMaggio tripled with two out in the tenth and scored the winning run on an infield hit by Johnny Pesky. Ned Garver went the distance to absorb the loss while Ellis Kinder. working in his 5'll.lh game. was the winner. He is young Cliff Ready who has been per- forming ycomnn-like service for his (cum without receiving too many headlines. Cliff has entered two games as a relief pitcher and has been downright mean with base hits. Altogether he has hur- lcd eight and one third innings and hits given up only two hits. It seemed only right that he should be the winning pitcher on Wednesday. I Lorne 1-lenncssey showed P! re- vr-rsal in form in the last game. The Cleveland skipper's prediction came when the Indians were in a bad slump and were just after dropping two in (1 row to the Philadelphia Athletics. "First its the Red Sox and now it's us and soon it will be the Yankees". he stated "They have not had a serious slump all season and are due for one. in ;Sisp.tember." 0 Well the Yankees appear to be in that slump now. First they lost xi double-header to the lowly Browns and yesterday they drop- ped their thlrd in ti row, this one to the Tigers. And who could be happier than Lopez. save perhaps -Steve O'Neill of the Boston Red Sox. Meanwhile the Indians con- tinue to stagger along the grim road to the pennant. Other win- ners were Anyway. Dale 13.. Pet Hanover and Miss Donna Mae. The largest crowd of the Sep- tember meet sat in at the race, held under a clear harvest moon. and they witnessed some of the finest track battles waged here in weeks. Loch Hanover with Claude O'Brien in the sulkle got away to the top in the inst heat and was never headed. At the middle of the back stretch on the first time around Johnny Kalmuck skipped and almost came to .1 dead stop causing Vella La Vella and Argot Pointer to pull up and lose valuable ground. But although she was about five length behind Vella La Velln was not though. She turned on a burst of speed and had caught up to Prince Budlong at the upper turn. Vella remained in third place until the upper turn again where she came up with Loch. The two battled it down the stretch with the finish being decided by the photo. Vellli was close on the second heat but was again nosed out. this time by Argot Pointer. The Pointer went to the top at the first turn followed by Prince Budlong and Vellli. Vella came up from two lengths behind but could not make it. Big Johnny Kalmuck paced his way to victory in the first dash. Johnny was in third place unul he pulled out near the top of the brick stretch and beat out Loch Hanover and Prince Budlong. Judy Kalmuck pulled a sur- prise in the third race when she Went HWBY on the rail and stay- ed there. Her toughest competi- tion was supplied by Yankee Dale who came second. Judy went away in number nine position the next time but again she shot to the top and could not be caught. Claude OlBrlen drove Dale 13 home a winner in the second race as the little gelding outlasted Miss Commando and a driving Miss Donna Mae.
