CANADA & THE ORIENT While no one knows exactly what Jhe Japanese and the Chinese are fighting about” except. that Japan is seeking to strengthen her position in the Far East, Canadians already have a lively interest in the Orient from the trade point of vicw and this may be developed to an almost unlimited extent. An Ottawa report says that trade with the Orient, Jap- an and China shows some interest- ing trcncls. Exports to Japan nearly doubled in the months of July, Aug- ust and September this year, and a ‘large increase is shown in exports I . to China. For the year ended Sep- tcnlber Canada's sales to Japan were $16,519,764 and imports from Japan 17,994,949, while for the month oi’ I September alone exports to Japan were $1,673,001, as compared with $899,929 for tllemoilth of July. Can- ada's sales to China in the year end- ed September last were $8,658,658, ‘_ and imports, $4,800,184, while for the month oi September alone exports to China were $707,900. as compared with $294,114 in August. In fact they are the mere tools of Dictator Stalin, and help to keep power for the Communists. In other countries than Russia their functions are similar. They are planted in any city, town or vil- lage, where unrest exists. Instruc- tions are given them to fomenb trouble whenever the chance arises. They form the nucleus around which the discontented gather. They spread the germs of class hat- red wherever those germs can be made to disseminate their virus. FERTILIZER INDUSTRY Canadian plants produce well over half the commercial fertilizers used in agriculture, yet the fertilizer in- dustry of the Dominion is only in its early stages, particularly in the chemical branch. The chief part of Canadian fertilizer production now conles from other industries which manufacture it as a by-product. These include some of the steel com- panics, as well as meat packing and fish packing plants. Quite recently, the chemical production of fertilizers has received a marked stimulus, es- pecially through association with the refining of Canadian metals. De- velopments of this nature will event- ually be the chief source of com- mercial fcrtilizers in the Dominion. A report on the fertilizer trade of Canada has just been made by W, H. 10sec, B.Sc., Chief of the Mining, Metallurgical and Chemical Branch of the Dominion Bureau of Statis- tics. Prepared in collaboration with the Department of Agriculture, this report deals with both the sales and Certainly, the evcn tenor of the lives of most Chinese has been little dis- turbed by the sporadic revolutions of ,, the past few years, even whorl these rlhave been of sufficient. importance _ to be widely heralded in the West. _ , It is the vast numbers of the popu- lation, and the loosencss of those "bonds which have great strength in " ' Western countries, which makes it V __ possible for life to be continued with __quiet surety under circumstances yum Iurope and North America utterly abnormal. m . qugeg’ 91mm; ungbtruglve Canadian industries as 392,120 tons. impomi of fertilizers, classifying them chemically and including a list of manufacturers.
