The battle, he said, began at day- break Sunday with an Ethiopian on- slaught on the Italian outpost at Mai Timchet. The Italians iell ' back lo the Pass where they knew important detachments oi Italian colonial troops were ready to aid them. At the same time another Ethiop- ian force swung northeastwsrd to- ward the Pass. Attempting to at- tack the Italians on their right flank, the correspondent said, Spfier Heavy Losses When the two Ethiopian iorces converged on the Pass region they were met by withering machine-gun fire and suiiered heavy losses. The fighting stopped Sunday night, continued sporadically on Monday and entered s. decisive stage Tuesday when the Italians launched a counter-offensive.
