They ._.______ Recoil-Y) Failure Andlncompetency w ‘Of Saunders Zzalarid 133,000 pounds of butter- How much do you thing we imported last year? 33,000,000 pounds. 0f, course it is not very safe for me t0 discuss this, because, according to the Minister of Agriculture, I d0 not know anything about farming. But on the face of it I fall to see how the importation of 33,000,000 pounds of butter from New Zealand in the past year helps the dairy and cheese industry of Canada. I have yet to see the economist who can explain that successfully. Do you know that we are sending to Great Britain 60,000,000 pounds of cheese less than we sent before the war? Does that mean that the cheese and butter industry of Canada is flourishing? Do you know that in the same time New Zealand has increased her shipments of cheese to Great Britain from 5i,- 000,000 pounds to 174,000,000 pounds a your? Which country do you think is making progress in the dairy in- dustry, Canada or New Zealand? Do you know that a. few years ago we were sending 10,000,000 pounds of butter to the United States? Last year we sent 20,000 pounds. D0 you know that a few years ago we sent 240,000,000 pounds of bacon to Great Britain? Last year we sent 34,000,000 pounds. Do you know that our milch cows are going to the United States at the rate of 2,000 a month? Does that look like progress, so far as Can- adian industry is concerned? Do you know that. there were 102,000 less milking cows in Canada for the years 1927-28? That looks like progress in the Canadian dairy industry-but not in the right direction. Those are mat- ters which should be dealt with by an agrlculturlst. A plain medical man cannot deal with them; all he can do ls ask the questions. Dairy Superintendent's Report I want to refer-for a few minutes to the report of the Department of Agriculture. ‘This is the report of the late Mr. J. A. MacDonald, dairy superintendent. You‘ all know that unfortunately that splendid man has been called to a higher life; but ric loaves behind in this Province e re- read first S‘. will ‘s: vary alt to duplicate. He leaves the record of having placed the butter and cheese indsutry of Prince Edward Island at the top 0f Canada; a splendid man in every respect. His death has been a very great loss to this Province. T1136 I; é. ‘ti-Elie? an Whirl Frieze can be no controversy; and I think that every member of this Legislature shares the sentiment I have express- ed in this regard. iApplause). Australian Treaty , The Minister of Agriculture tried "TY hard the other night tn tell us Whit a splendid thing this Australian “my was for Prince Edward Island. There are just one or two facts in this connection to which I would like to draw attention. The first. is this. l-hlt the dairy industry of Canada is "M11 between $250,000,000 and $000.- M-WO in revenue. A 1.10 from new’ would prevent the foreign product in this Canada. Through his efforts) the first cheese factories were estab- lished in this Province. Dr. Robert- son also took a great interest in Red Cross work and in public health. It is remarkable that those two splendid men, whose services meant so much to the dairy industry in this Province, passed away at practically the same lime. In his Dairy R/sport for 1029 the late Mr. McDonald stated: "On Oct. 1B and 20 I attended the annual meetng of the Nation- al Dairy Council at Ottawa. This meeting was a good deal more in- terestlng from the standpoint of the producer than meetings held in former years. The price of cheese averaged about three cents lowcr than last year, and the same as two years ago, and was lower than it should be according to the price of butter. This was caused no doubt by the heavy shipments nf New Zealand cheese on the British markets. Cheese was assembled every two weeks and shipped direct to the Old Country via Halifax." A TARIFF ANOMOLY That bears out just what I have been stating, that the Old Country market is no longer favorable to us on account of the heavy shipments of New Zealand cheese. And why? Be- cause they am able to produce their butter and cheese very much more economically than we can in Canada. Wouldn't you naturally think that a Canadian Government, recognizing the handicap under which the dairy industry of this country is laboring, from coming in at such a rats of duty as to place an additional handi- cap on our dairymen?
