One Panther team took a big step toward the playoffs, another remained stagnant or even slipped a little, and the other con— tinued its plunge to the cellar. The Basketball Panthers on the strength of two weekend wins ran their record to four wins and six losses as they edged closerand closer to a playoff berth. The win rec- ord as it stands now repre— Sents the most wins ever by a Panther team in reg- ular season play. With six games left to play, the Panthers, if they win three of these, should make the playoffs.‘ 1 Actually, three games are all the Panthers should hope to win because “the two games against Acadia and the one against St. Mary's are going to be almost impossible to win. The Axemen.and Huskies are ’ rated second and fifth res— pectively in the nation; don't give up hope on the Panthers but don't bet your life savings on them“ The other three outings will see the Panthers tack— le the U.N.B. Red Raiders twice at home and the Mt. A. Hawks on the road. These two teams will not pose as much of a problem as S.M.U. and Acadia but the Panthers are going to have to play their best if they want to win and earn that all important playoff spot. This weekend, the fPanthers host the all powerful Axemen who, by the way, have our old arch foe, former U.P.E.I. star, John Dionisi, in the line4 up. This will be the only chance-that the Panthers will have to beat the Axe— men. Very few gymnasiums offer such an unhospitable enviornment for visiting teams as does our four walled mansion. This type of gym will give the Panthers the only advan- tage they will get in this game So they better take advantage of it. GAME TIME IS SATURDAY AT 2:00 P.M. SO BE THERE. The Hockey Panthers failed to gain any ground in their bid for a playoff Spot as they split two weekend games: winning over Mt.A. 3 —2 and losing to Moncton 6 -3. The Panthers on Friday night played a solid game even though at times they had serious lapses in defe— nse. The Panther threesome of Billy Weytherbie, Tom Hayward and Shawn MacIssac provided all the scoring punch with MacIssac with two and Hayward with a single. Weutherbie picked up assists on all three goals. The Panthers were for- tunate to hold on to their one goal lead as the Mounties came within a whisker of tying the game. With about thirty seconds left Steve Van Diest made a save on a Mt. A. shot, however, the re— bound got away. With Van Diest away out of-position and the whole net to shoot at, Greg Wight got a bit over anxious and rifled his shot off the post. They say that hockey is a game of inches and that time, it was proved true. Sunday afternoon with all its supposed stillness and sanctity must have forgot about Varsity Arena as the Blue Eagles and the Panthers played one of the dirtiest, hard hitting contests seen here in re- cent years. Each team dis— played its unusual talents for sneaky, dirty tactics right before the eyes of the referee. Whether he saw them or not remains to be seen, but if he let them play the whole game as they THE CADRE FEBRUARY 2, 1973 PAGE 7 B’Ball PanthersWin2 Panthers Still Punting did in the first period and a half, it might have turned in to a reenactment of Custer's Last Stand. Despite outshooting the _ Blues 47 — 40 over the game the Panthers came out on the short end of a 6 — 3 score. Brilliant goal— tending by the Blue Eagle goaltender in the last half period kept the Panthers off the score sheet as they pumped shot after shot. This weekend is a new weekend and this Sunday's game is a new game so let's hope that the Panthers can put it to the X-MEN from St. Ffix. GAME TIME SUNDAY IS 2:00P.M. YOU'D BETTER BE THERE!!! The Lady Panthers are on their way down to the bottom of the heap as a result of two weekend loss- es. In those games the Panthers played great till half time, then they fell apart. They play a great first half away and a great second half at home. Maybe this weekend they can put it all together. If they don't maybe they should conSider switching. to a neutral location,it couldn't do any harm. This weekend, the Lady Panthers host S.T.U.
