The significance of the story is threefold: The Russian fleet had been repaired; the commander had a settled purpose to escape. and no doubt if poss- ible to jointhe Vladlvostook squadron; he met with a terrible punishment in the loss of one battleship sunk, another battleship and acruiser disabled. Thus one fourth ofthe Russian fleet was put out of action by torpedo attack, while the Japanese suffered slight damage. With this reverse coming after three terrible successive defeats on land, there is little wonder that the Russians are losing heart, as reported] Trouble With The Kidncys Ailments of the Most Painful Nature Result-Prompt Cure Comes with the Use of - Ur. Mark Guy Pearse in First Methodist immense Audiences Greeied Him, at Both services Yesterday- Hundreds are Charmed with the Great Prescrer- Immense audiences greeted the Rev. Mark Guy Pearse in the First Methodist Church yesterday. At the morning service the church was coiiipistely filled and in the evening long before the time for service it was scarcely possible to obtain a seat in the building. The reverend gentleman held the closest attention of his audiences throughout his sermons. In the morning he took for his text the lessons of the fcwls of the air and the lilies of the field as found in Matthew 0, i9-31; and delivered an eloquent dis- course on the injunction, “Dcn't Worry." lu the evening the reverend gentleman spoke oi' the lowllness of Christ from the words in Matthew ll, lil, “The Son of man cameeating and drinking :and they say behold 'a man gluttonous and a winebibber, a friend of piibllcans and sinners," The sermon throughout was an eloquent plea for the kindly word and thoughtful action as the most powerful lever to bring humanity to Christ. No synoptic report would do the preach er justice, Mr. Pearse strikes the average Charlottetown church-goer as more demonstrative in action than the preachers we are accustomed to. “A great preacher and a great actor," was one comment heard. Undoubtedly he is a great preacher, with the presence, the voice and the magnetism that engage and hold attention, great versatility, the gift of eloquence and also the gift of humor, a close and sympathetic touch with nature and with human nature, a love for the beautiful and above alla reverent spirit and deep spiritual insight. His manner is varied, and farthest removed from monotony. He is never dull. Gems of thought, clear conceptions of truth clothed with beauti- ful language run through his discourses from beginning to end. Sometimes in a lengthened passage he charms with easy grace. Anon he rises in eloquent flight or abruptly strikes a Sledge hammer blow at hypocrisy, vice or wrong. At the next turn an illustration of great aptness provokes a smile. Few men of the age are equipped with so numerous and effective for the warfare, offensive and defensive of the Christian ministry.
