Considerable weight is now given
to the claim that America was
named after Richard Americke, a
sheriff of Bristol, Eng., and not
after the Italian, Amerigo Vespuccl,
who, it ls said, was nn obscure per.

ica in 1497, gave the name to me

ish Museum, according to the Tour-
ist and Convention Bureau of the
Canadian National Railways. An
ancient manuscript found in West-
minster Abbey gave rise to the'
claim as it proved that John Cabot|
returned to Bristol and settled
there after his second voyage and
continued to receive the pension
granted by the King of England.
This pension was dcrivrd from the
customs levies collected at the port
of Bristol and the collector was
Richard Amerlcke who was a lead-
ing citizen of Bristol at the time
and sheriff (1503).) The Germans
and Dutch write the name "Amer-
icka" and thk is given as an added
proof that Cabot named' it after his
friend Richard Amerlcke. It ia
thought that some foreign writer,
never having heard of Richard
Amcricke, got the name 'confused
with Amcrigo. Added weight is giv-
en to this argument by the fret that
Amerigo was the Christian name
and not the surname of the Italian,
Vespucci. John Cabot touched at
the island of'Cape Breton, at the
eastern tip of Nova Scotia on June
24, 1407, and probably proceeded
into the Gulf of Bt. Lawrence for a
short distance on‘ this, his first,
voyage.
