MCLEAN There died at Montague on July 29th Hector C. McLean, aged 66 years. His illness lasted over a year having lveral _relapses but the suffering that reduced his once strong body and large physique was borne without complaint. he passing peacefully out unto that bourne from which no traveller rc- turns. "And tho from out the boume of time and place Thy floods may bear me far I hope to meet my Pilot face to face, When I have crossed bhe bar." Vlfhen a young man he followed occupation of farming in his na- tive settlemtnt. of Long Creek. Bc- ing a supporter of the Liberal Par- ty in politics he was given charge of one od the first large road ma- chines imported to this Island, and he 'worked on the principal roads in the West River district during some terms of the Liberal adminis- tration. But on hearing the glow- ing accounts of the West and its possibilities, he was among the first' to answer the call for laborers ln its wheat fields. Finding ready' employment on the large thresh- ing outfits and with coristructioni companies, he remained West for some seasons, and the useful. knowledge and practical exper- ience that those positions gave him stood him in good stead in after, years. Returning he settled in Montague about the time that town was ilwonporated. He was made its first ohief of police and town constable. He was foreman on street work, and member of the fire brigade and had special care of the fire fighting apparatus, All those positions he filled in the sat- isfaction of the town. On resigning them he received s position on the G. S. S. Brant. On this steamer, i while rendering aid to an icebound~ light house keeper, he received in- juries that made it impossible 101” him to continue longer in service. Returning to Montague he filled minor positions, was caretaker and janitor of the Montague Memorial School and in many holllostcads and dwellings remain llasling evi-i dence of his sllbstuntinl work.
