July 17, 1897. CITIZEN. -—_- | FRENCH ACARTAN TEACHERS MEET. The teachers and friends of the Acatian schools under the presidency of Inospecter J. U. Arsenault, met in convention at Bloomfield on Thursday aad Friday of last week. The spacious parochial lial] was tastefully decorated with greenings and mot'os. A more beautiful spot than Bloomfield at this season of the vear could not be found anywhere. Snug farmhouses dot the clear and fertile fields, skirted with luxuriant maples everywhere, while the Mill River meanders in peace and beaaty away towards the East to mingle its waters with the Cascumpec Bay where the steeple of the Alberton Church glints in the dist- fort and charm. At, 10.30 o’clock, sbarp, Mr. Inspector tapped his gavel upon the President’s table and the Fifth Acadian Teacher’s Conven- tion was called to order. The President having ordered the roll call and invited the enrolmert of new members, the minutes of the last meeting | were read by Secretary Galiant and adopted. Then the President made, with his ueual grace and appositiveness, the usual annual address which was greeted with much appiause. This over, the es- teemed pastorof St. Anthony’s, Rev. F. X. Gallant, stepped forward and read an exceedingly Ixerary greeting. The charm of the rev. gentleman’s diction, the graceful gestures, the scholasiic matter employed won at once the admiration of. all. Mr. Andre Deiron speaking for the teachers made the reply in filting terms | Shoctpithy speeches were then given by | Revs Dr. Chaisson, A. E Burke,P. P. Arsen- Fault -and dd. P. McGrath. Be- sides the teachers a_ full house listened to the paper and discu-sions, the former of which were well up tothe stao- dard and the lateer animated and practical, Indeed a more intelligent and well looking bodv of male and female teachers could not be gathered together anywhere. While it would be invidious to make | di-tinction, we feel that Mr. J. O. Arse- commendation for his learned aud witha! entertaining discourse on I'rench grammar, a difficult subject. Mr. Phileas Leclair, |for a young man, did his profession honor in his well prepared avd nicely reat papers. But as we said all the papers at the different sessions were good and the singing was also splendid especially the God Save the Queen at the close. It is pleasing to be able to congratulate the Acadian teachers whose numbers are in- vention the same measure of suceess whict, marked the Bloomfield one. omen ee iments is nceeenteensecaliat ee a ~~ be e+ MR. He was most rapturously applauded. He also expressed the opinions of his coliea- gue Mr. Beaton on the temperance ques- tion, and spoke out so manfally for the cause of temperance that on resuming his seat he was followed by rounds of uoceas- ing applause. Mr. Geo. Simpson showed himself to be a Liberal ot the worst type. Dr. McNeil! followed with a fiae speech ie which he showed the tactics character- istic of the Liberals in this Island aad in the other provinces, and that whenever a Liberal Government was in power the debt of the Province always weat up. He spoke of the manner in which they had been treated by their member, Mr. Davies, at Ottawa, who bad paid no attention to the petition fora railway s nt to him at the beginning of the recent session, and of the manner in which the Dominion oftizials | had been deprived of their votes and given them back. The Doctor was most atten- tively listened to throughout, and at the finish was most warmly applauded, Mr. J.C.
