The hymns sung i were, ”Almighty Father. who Doth Give", and "Where Cross The ,Crowded Ways of Life". Roll call was answered by a verse of Scrip- ture. Dues and offerings amount- ing to 33.05 were received. The program consisted of a dialogue. in three parts, 1. Food vs. famine: 2. Bread vs. bullets; Ii. Apathy vs. aid, and which was very interesting i and I instructive. Mrs. Fred John- stone invited the society to her :home for the next meeting. Montague Beaver Club Meeting A meeting of the Beaver Club was held in the Beaver Hall, Montague recently. The president. Mrs. B. H. Yeo. presided, and in the absence of the secretary. Mrs. Arthur Sullivan was appointed to act temporarily. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved. Ton members responded to the roll call. The committee reported that the decorating of the interior of the hall had been completed. and it now presents a pleasing appear- nnt'8. with the color scheme cameo rose, and turquoise. The piano, which had been sent to Millar Bros. for repairs, will be ready for use the latter part or May, and Webster's Orchestra will again furnish the music for the Saturday night dances. It was decided to have a special dance the latter part of this month with Don Messer's Or- chestra in attendance. The Friday night dances are to be discontinued owing to the school children having to prepare for their examinations. The club is having a fence built on the east side of the hall. which will im- prove the appearance of the grounds as well as prevent tres- passing on the adjoining property. Other matters were discussed and committees appointed to look into them. Souris and Vicinity The auxiliary schooner Susie Pauline. from Amherst, M.I., ar- rived in port. on May ilth and will take on a load of cordwood. The Patrol Leaders Course held in Charlottetown on May llth and 12th was attended by the follow- ing boys from Souris Scout Troop: Mike Gallant, Art Peters. Reg Pet- ers, Kimball Jarvis. Leonard Mac- Cormack, Reagh Ellis, and Edward Clinton. The Ladies' Aid of Bay Fortune United Church held a successful pantry sale in St. James United Church Hall on Saturday. May 12. There was a lovely display oi cakes. cookies, pies, etc. The sale was under the direction of Mrs. Reid Underl-iay. president or the Society. Mr. George Webster, our local sawyer, reports a steady demand for lumber. He has already ship- ped one car. is now loading one and will ship another next week. The lumber consists oi 2x4 and up to 21:7 and boards. He has also shipped a car of slabs. He has on hand to cut. 150.000 feet of softwood and 30,000 feet of hard- wood. Mr. Webster's mill is located in S0lli"iA Line Road. Mrs. Marjorie Binna led her team to victory in the Sourls Bowling League on Thursday night. May 10th, and wins the ladies' trophy by defeating Mrs. L. F. Power”: team in the limls. The members of the winning team are Mrs. Marjorie Blnns, Mrs. Basil Johnston. Miss Marion whalen. Miss Audrey Grant and Miss Ber- tha Gallant. The Community League playoffs are next. Mr. Angus Lavia has completed his contract with the Camapro co. of West Grindstone, Magdalen Islands. This contract called for the erection of two tanks. each holding 14,400 gallons and situated about 750 feet from the head of the Railroad Wharf. They are connected to the wharf with 216- tnch pipe. where a. pump muse is installed. The Canapro Co. op- erates a fish meal plant at Grind- stone and the tanks are to be used for storing herring oil which will be hauled to sourll by bout. CHARLO"I'TETOWN Murray libr. North Man Celebrates 92nd BIT-I-Iltldi Mr. Benjamin Glow of Murray Harbor North celebrated his 92nd birthday yesterday. A son of the late Mr. and Mrs. James Claw, he was born on the homeshad in Murray Harbor North in 1859. His wife. the former Kate Mac- Lean, passed away some years ago. Two sons. James and George. and two daughters, Stella, Mrs. Laurie Murdock. and Jean, live on the old homestead. In his youth Mr. Glow owned and operated the only general- store in the district. The business is now carried on by the sons. He also owned and operated a lobster factory known as Clow's Factory. It has since ceased operations. Despite his advanced years Mr. Clow is very active and enjoys good health. 1 During the past hockey-season he was a very ardent hockey fan and a great supporter of the Charlotte- town Islanders. On this happy occasion the Guardian joins with many friends in extending congratulations to Mr. Glow. church, doing the walls, seats and floors. This has been a big job but, with the continued coopera- tion of all they expect to have the work completed for service on Sunday. May 20th. The work has been under the supervision of their pastor, Rev. W. B. J. Corckum. St. Mary's Baseball Club was the name chosen by the boys at n meeting held recently to organ- ize for the coming summer. ' The regular monthly,.meeting of the Town Council was held on Friday night. May ll, with Mayor Lavie in the chair. The following Councillors were present: J. A. Peters, Andrew Meurant. Stirling Gillespie, and Alex Mooney. Rout- ine bills and the police report were read and passed: In support of the move made by the Board of Trade the Council has declared that May 21st until May zilth will be clean-up week in the town. In connection with this Mr. M. J. McQuaid, Town Clerk, was in- structed to write to the Island Telephone Co. and the Maritime Electric Co.. asking them to have their poles painted on Main Street. Mayor Lavie was appointed to at- tend the hearing of the Board of Public Utilities to be held shortly. Some discussion regarding the in- stnllation of a sewage system in the Town Hall took place. Tenders have already been called for this work. A 'letter from Mrs. Adele Kemp. manager of Rosewood Cab- ins, asking for the support of the Council was read and filed. The interior of the building has been completely renovated and enlarged. New tile floor has been laid. New cabinets made from birch plywood with sliding glass doors; new countcrs.also plywood; fluorescent lights; new windows for display- ing goods, and in the new mirrors "you can really see yourself as others see you." The walls and ceiling have received I coat of paint and all the plywood varnish- ed. Tha carpenter work was done by Mr. Michael Lavoie. The Leai-cl Bros. George and Ray. are to be congratulated on having such a modern store. indeed a credit to the town. The annual May Day procession in honour of the Blessed Virgin was held in st. Mary's Church on Sunday evening, May lath, at 7.30 p.m. The procession entered the church headed by one of the sen- ior girls carrying the ” of the Children of Mary society. as- sisted hy four of the smaller girls. Next came six flower girls. fol- lowed by ninety of the smaller girls, all dressed in white and wearing white veils. Then eight little boys were followed by fifty of the senior girls dressed in black and wearing white veils. Al the procession moved around the church the girls sang hymns of praise to the Blessed Virgin. The closing event was the crowning of the statue of the Blessed Virgin by the flower girls. It was s beauti- ful sight and the sisters of St. Mary's Convent deserve much credit for the way they trained the children for this event.
