Practically all of the 70 hogs shown were sold, and the number of sows exhibited was not large enough to suit buy- ers. The average price for sows was $21. with a maximum of $48 and the average for boars was $19 with a maximum of $36. Many of the animals bought went to the province of Quebec. It was sur- prising to note that there were only 26 members of the Association in the Province whereas Nova Sco- iln and New Brunswick had 50. Reference was made to Mr. MheAulay, Souris, whose work, was well known in the swine show. and to Percy Dickson, Emest Houston and Ernest Bulman, all of whom were known to be breeding along the same lines. Mr. mid plimented the Do- minion Live Stock Branch of Charlottetown which had held a. number of bacon hog sales in the Province last year. Special refer- ence was made to one show held at Albany with valuable results. ‘Ilhc breeding of pure bred sows was a practice certain to react in a favorable mlnncr on the indus- try. Mr. Reid stated in conclusion that prices locally, though small, compared favorably with those of other parts of Canada, a fact doubtless due to thc activities of the clubs. unaw- scum Hon Thomas MoNutt, Minister of Agriculture, expressed pleasure at being pro =1 nt wth the swine breeder. ‘Pile SVtiIIO business had in the past been of fir-st value cltiuugh at p".o_;,.‘. r'.i.- swine products imlported by Great Britain came from Canada, and there a large market should exist, Mr. McNutt believed. The only thing for the farmers to do was to look with optimism to the future, to the time when prosperity and a more stable economic system should be brought about On behalf of the Department of Agriculture. ID‘. MoNutt welcomed the dele- gates to the city, and expressed the hope that their meetings would be profitable. inducement Needed Mr. Peter Brodie was glad to see that the president looked on the bright side of things, but the far- mers w ‘ “ some inducement to stay in the hog business. It was the feeder rather than the breed- er who made a success of raising hogs Mr. Brodie stated. ‘There was I difficulty in getting a market for pork, but at the same time there were two or three millions of dol- lars worth of pork imported into the Maritlmes each year. Mr. Brodie advocated moderation in carrying on every industry. He be- lisved that hogs should be graded at the point of shipping, as the present method was unsatisfactory. Precautions should be taken by the railway i0 sec that the hogs were not injured in shipment. Department Plans ,'Mr. S. Directors The nominating committee “m. ed the following directors: Kings, in secondlng the adoption of Miss Haslams report, congratulated her on the splendid manner in which the "Hon1e” is being conducted and expressed the hope that as the years go by still more good work may be accomplished. Miss Helen Terrell, Assistant Superintendent, who supervises the girls’ studies as well as their games; in the new "Gym," gave an inter-' esting report on her work, Rev. I-I. D, Raymond and Mr. G. D. DeBlois spoke in congratulatory terms on the reports presented and also on the management of Cun- dali Home where the girls, not only live under ideal home surround- ings, but have, as well, the advant- ages of supervision 0f their studies and recreation. The meeting closed with the Na- tional Anthem. The House was then open for in- spection and afternoon tea. served in the dining room which was gay with daffodils. MaoMlllan, head of the Branch at Ottawa, believed that the branch would be able to carry on its usual work, Mr. Irvine believed. A bacon litter competition and the estab- lishing of a swine club in one county were also suggested by Mr, MaoMillan, the speaker stated. Mr. Irvine requested thc fanners to visit the branch office when they came into the city. The price net paid here through the co-operative cluibs compared very favorably‘ with that rcccivcd in eastern Oh- tario. which district was supposed to have the best hog market in Canada, Mr. Irvine said. Advanced Registration Mr. Irvine, on request explained the principle and system of ad- vanced registration, wherdzy the inherent qualities of the animals are determined and noted. It was pos- sible to convince the directors that the office be moved. Objection came from Nova Scotia with the result that the president decided that the move was illegal. It we: ascertained that the office Obllld be removed as long as the charter was left ,in Moncbon.
