P.—At Paris station, on June 5th, a very -large consignment of knitted goods were shipped to various points in Canada. The goods were valued at $50,000, and, it is said, represent the largest shipment of the kind ever madein this country. This littie argument in favor of the N. P. has much more weight than colamns of Free Trade vitu- peration can overbalance.— London (Ont. ) Free Press. A Cuttp Born wirn A Bear’s Hrap.— Some time ago a woman in an up-river village —a short distance from Fredericton—gave birth to a child which had a bear’s head, al- though the other portions of the system are the same as those of an ordinary infant. The woman was in Fredericton, during the visit of Barnum’s exhibition, and the great showman endeavored to procure the child from her to exhibit, but she would not part with it. The child, of course, is unable to talk, but makes a noise similar to a bear’s cub.—S¢t. John Tel. , A veay good attendance at the market to-day. Vegetables, etc., were in abundance. Sales were slow at the following prices :— Beef, (small) per lb., from 6 to 12 cents; do., per qr., from 5 to 8 cents; mutton, from 6 to 10 cents; lamb, per qr., from 50 cents to $1.00; turkeys, from $1.00 to $1.20; chickens, from 40 to 50 cents; butter, from 14 to 18 cents; potatoes, from 35 to 40 cents; oats, from 34 to 46 cents; eggs, from 84 to 10 eonts per doz.; hay, from 35 to 40 cents. AN accident, which miraculously did not rove fatal, occurred about eleven o’clock this forenoon, A team, which was unguardedly driven along Richmend Street by two young ladies, ran against a little fellow named Tobin, and knocked him down. The wheel of the wagon struck violently against his head, and iutlicted a very nasty gash on his right cheek, causing blood to flow profusely. ‘he little fellow displayed true grit—for, although he was badly shaken, he rose up manfully and wended his way homewards. It is time that careless and reckless driving through the street of the city was discontinued. Tue race between Happney, of this city, and Seymour, fof $4 Johr, did not take place in St. John on Friday last. The stakes were drawn on Saturday evening. Seymour re- fused to avcept the offer of ey Fc take 300 yards start. The stakeholder, Mr. James Williams, of Portland, was informed by the friends of Seymour that unless he handed over the $30 deposited by them they would immediately take legal steps to recover the amount. Happney, therefore, considered ‘‘discretion the better part of valor,” and ac- cordingly agreed to have Seymour’s part of the stakes returned. Happney further asserts that on no consideration will he again propose or accept a contest with Seymour. Tue Quicxesr }?assaGe ON Recorp.—The Allan steamship Sardinian passed St, Felix at half-past eight on Friday morning—being due at Quebec at midnight, and landed her mails at Kimouski at noon. This is a wonderfully swift passage, being in fact the quickest trip on record. On the 3lst of August, 1879, the steamship Sarmatian arrived at Rimouski at 6.05 p, m,, making the fastest trip on record up to that time. in November of the same year the Sardinian beat this record by one hour and five minutes, having made the trip in six days twenty-two and a half hours. If the Sardinian succeeds in reaching Quebec at the hour expected, of which there is little doubt, she will have beaten her own best time by four hours,—Montreal Paper.
