I am afraid it is a fals security. What are the facts? Take Prince County and you will find liquor sold freely at different points from end to end In Sum merside you will find open houses without any pretence at concealing their business, and here at Kensing ton we have six places selling, but not so openly Take King’s County and you will find that the husiness there Warrants the Government in giving an of fender against the C -r A ad bonded house for hisown convenience. and that can be taken as a fair in dex of the sentiment of that County. If not, why it tolerated? For Queen's county, Charlottetown sup plies the country anc drunkenness is on the increase everywhere. [ have been observing the drunk- e of Charlottetown and on the trains, and it as bad and worse than the days of the old license and whither we are going? there a change we are going back to the licensed tavern throughout the whole Island. You can meet scores of temperance peo- ple who have lost courage and freely say that the licensed tavern is pre- ferable tothe present state of af- fairs. Briefly stated that is the state of the temperance cause at present. What is the matter ? is the ©. 2. Se eee Are questions to be squarely met. That the Act is not a failure can be proven, but a large portion of the country has lost faith in its enforce- ment. When Premier Peters re- fused for years to account for the Scott Act fines, the belief became general among the Conservatives that there was something wrong, that he was using the Act for a party advantage. That belief had a deploravle effect. tightly or wrongly very many Conservatives believe that a fine is only an addi- tion to the Liberal campaign fund if collected and if not collected the fine is held over the offender's head conpel him and his friends to ‘vote right.’’ = disappointment at the out- come of the plebiscite and tie dis- r_sard of the pledges given The Guerdian atour last loc. 1! elec ion WweoaTre Waki is Hess iS |. it W, Unless is b-’ cur local representat ves in vot- iiy ior the prs ut li ense law in Charlottetown and othe. fac s,such as the recent Hotel Davies case. has impressed many that the whole enforcement is a farce, and to mer- tion t m>erance iu an ord niry poii- tical meeting now is to be laughed at. Thechurch itself is dead on the question. You will remember the call for a large meeit- F of the Alliance last winter to deal with the liquor que; t.on as aliecting the city and wnat ecest the churches took in it. ‘hy if it were not for the two Bap and one Methodist minister who gave their assistance we would have a church represented. The situation is certainly very dis- couraging. The temperance socie- ties, Sons of Temperance, Independ- ent Order and W. C. T. U. have lost influence and are practically dead. These are unpleasant statements. but they are true; and what are we ,to do? Our duty is to point out the danger and place the facts before the electors and they should deal with their representatives. But if our experience will be repeated we may get the pledge of the politician but the rumsellers will get directly or indirectly, what they want. : Yours, : / JOHN Lit not ANDERSON. __ Easy to Take Easy to Cperate Because purely vegetable—yet thor ough, prompt, healthful, satisfactory Hood’s Pilis Liberal Conservative Association ON THE DECLINE?)
