For weeks after the last Seen = |speeches which either themselves or , weg hte Thea” Dominion election the Grits claimed that others in the Grit ranks have delivered at intervals since 18380. The first assault was conducted by M McMillan, of Huron, who moved the House into committee to following resolution, scorT’s | MULSION consider the gy ‘‘That it is expedient to remove the duty on and place on the free list all grains and seeds which do not ripen in Canada, which are now largely imported and sown fo the production of food for cattle under the system of feeding cajled soiling and ensilage, now largely adopted by the farmers of Canada.” The Minister of Customs explained that the Government, in considering the ques- ticn, had been met by this difficulty, that seeds which ripened in British Columbia would not ripen in Ontarie, and what would ripen in the Niagara district would not ripen in P. E. Island. So unimportant, however, was the matter, that the duty amounted to only one cent upon every seven tons. As some of the information elicited dur- ing the debate may be of value to our farmers, I summarise it as briefly as pos- sible. One acre will grow from 25 to 30 ensilage, and less than 5 tons of ensilage will feed a cow for 200 days. If the ground is properly prepared, the crop will grow even better in dry than in wet Prof. Robertson says the best corn for en- silage is our Indian corn, provided the land is properly cultivated. The best results are oltiined from planting in drills, inches apart, three pecks of corn being re- quired for the acre. Frank Morris, father of the silo system in the United States, had stated to Dr. Bergin that he had large farms in Maryland and immens« tracts under corn in ‘Texas and Georgia, an the result of his experience was that the corn of the climate in which the silo was to be used, was the corn which was best ed for the purpose. Scuthern corn wou not ripen in the north, and would not pri duce the same amount of juice or amount of sugar as the corn of this country, because of the short season and our north ern climate. Mr. MeMillan’s motion was rejected by 84 to 59, A whole yet was spent in discussing a motion of Mr. Platt, **that machinery de signed for use in mining oper: ations should not be subject to Customs duty when im ported into Canada for mining purposes.’ This proposition was warmly supported b vit SMO LOOM LO LO OO Of Pure Cod Liver Oil and HYPOPHOSPHITES of Lime and Soda am perye et ( Scott's E Emulsion « Tenulston. es ; is a wonderful Producer. itis Best Remedy o “CONSUMPTION, .
