NOVEMBER 21, 1579. | —- —s The « Daily Examiner.” P ‘An abstract and brief chronicle of the | sete re representi ing all denominations in the weathe r, with time.” — Nhakesp« ore. Two sND A HALF YEARS have passed away | since tho first number was issued ; and still! the Dar.y Examiner persists in making its| daily round of the city and its daily tour of the Province, with its daily “ abstract and brief chronicle of the time.” It has hung on to life so long, and through so many dif | ficulties that, somehow, people are* begin- ning to have increased confidence in it ; and, of late, the volume of its business | transactions has increased fully a half. If this increase continues (and we hope it may) we shall soon be enabled to print a larger paper at a smaller cost. In fact, we now offer fo all our readers who advance payment before the Slst day of December nect, the Damry Examiner throughout the coming year, for four dollars. The offer is open to those only who pay in advance, within the time named, for the entire year. Accounts will forthwith be made out at the old price for the paper for twelve months from date—instead of for six months as heretofore and those who take advantage of the offer will have the reduction made at the tie of payment. There are a few —and but a few—subscribers who have fallen into arrears. If these do not pay up on or before Friday next we ‘shall be compel led to'stop the paper, and invoke the aid of the Siipendiary Magistrate and his gentle- manly sv ordinates. Sa sient ean ts et ee Ths Hospital for Insane Persons. We are informed that the report of the Patriot of yesterday, respecting the Lun- atic Asylum— that almost rival the black hole of Calcutta,’ tissue of unmitigated misstatements. And if so, it isa libel upon Dr. Bianchard and upon the trustees of the institution. These take the ‘its horrers etc. —is a gentlemen will, we doubt not, proper measures to rebut the statement. This community is too deeply interested in the care of the insane to permit the false) statement of even the Putrivé, in respect to the Asylum, to pass seavukedebbe We are informed and believe that the Asyluin was never cleaner, better ventilated or better kept than it now fs. With regard to the delay in removing the patients to new hospital, we are informed that it is due to the fact that some articles required in the institution—part of which have been ordered from abroad—-have, throngh no fault of the officials concerned, not yet been obtained. Sir Leonard Tilley at Guelph. In Guelph (Ont.) a few evenings ago, Sir Leonard Tilley was entertained at a ban- quet at which he, of course, nade a speech. The speech, though confessedly an in- promptu one, is pleasant reading. It is full of assurance and hope for the future of Cinada. Sir Leonard very happily showed how it is that Sir John MeDonald isa lucky man to lead a Government ; and dwelt at length upon the results of the tariff, the re-opening of the West India Trade, and} the new life inspired into manufactures, without any material in- crease of prices. He said the great cen- tres of trade, such as Montreal and To- ronto, had been the first to feel the bene- fits of the new policy ; improvement has been manifested in nearly every part of the Dominion, and the manifestation ‘would be more marked in the course of afew years. — 7a -+ —- An Impudent Charge — Wer learn, on closer enquiry, that the account from which the Patriot says. the Engineor’s certificate was torn off in the Public Works oilice, never was in the Pub- lic Works office at all! This is a fair speci. men of missioner of Public Works is subjected by the organ of all the-Grits in this Island. There is no truth in them. The Patriot is inventive, unscrapulous and _ reckless—, hardly worth noticing. _-enhiiaiaiiaialinidamnae Schor: Bocks. The meeting adjeurned to meet on the 19th of December next, when ali monies evenes will be placed in the hands of the ‘Treasurer. or - — oo The Royal Princes at Sea. A writer in the ‘* Whitchall Review” says: Prince George never seems so happy as when rushing up and down the ladders, carrying orders from deck or reporting’ the time; and on the first day of his watch- keeping at Portland he ceclined to go on shore to the athletic sports of the ‘*War- rior’ in the afternoon, on ie ground that he preferred his ‘‘4 to 6,” and he kept it. Prince Edward has silted in tmself to all; he has a peculiarly gentle, winning man- ner; indeed, both lads are rare examples of the excellent results of careful training and judicious management, thoroughly obedient to orders, most st tudied i e respect to their seniors, both on and off duty, and never forgetful of the fact that on board the ‘‘Bacchante”’ they are naval cadets, and nothing smore. ‘Ihe strictest orders have been wiv en that they are to be treated in every respect like the other. gun-reom officers of similar pew Aree difference whatever is to be made. “They are not al- lowed to go aloft at present, but then none of the naval cadets are; there is to be no partiality, favor, or affection show n, either between the Princes and their brother officers, or between the Princes themselves. While there can be no doubt in the minds of anyone as to the inestimable value of the fp life of one upon whom so much may hang in future years, it can hardly be ‘enied | that if would be inadvisable, circumsianced as they are at pres¢ nt, and with such coin- paratively stuall difercnee between them in point of age, to make any distinction in the instructions issued concerning them. In common parlance, it would not do to make fish of one and flesh of the other. @2eo- MISCHLLANHOUS Dr. Wagaer, of Ham! sUiY, is bringing out a n>w edition of Shakespeare in thirty, sixpenny pirts, with English introductions and notes. Recent critics concede him to have Leen a true poct, and n t a myth ora mere colector, as Wolfe taught. And now another Wolfe, a 3 time a surgeon, aud of Glasgor w, has p ablished a pe mphie n which he is pret’ ny success ful i in showing that 2 singer of the iad certainly had an ocular defect, not color blindness, as Mr. Gladstone thinks, but amblyopia, from Egyptian oph- thalmia. ‘The evidence is gathered from the treatmeat of colors in the poet. eet me A Swiss Wworkmait named Rapin has ex- | hibited at Chaax de Fonds aelock which in- dicates the day of the week and month, the signs of the zodiac, the moon’s phases, and | the hi our of sunrise and sunset. lum is a barometer. quarters, and at every lourit plays one of, eight tunes, for any one of which it can be | covered uy Director Palisa, of Pola.
