I-IOLMAN S LETTER. Rgfen-ing to Mr. Holman's letter which was unavoiflably held over for a day and nownppcsirs in another column, it may be observed that an ideal winter service would be one which would give us a daily steamer from both Charlotte- town and Summerside to and from the .available ports on the mainland. Point du Client-, not being available, if Cape ‘Tornientine could be made available it would serve agcod purpose, but by 110 means so good as Point du Chene because the steamer would not connect directly with-'the Government Railway system- It is a mistake to suppose that Chnrlottetownis extremely grasping in -the matter. In fact this port enj0yS€l direct steamer service to and from they mainland only a little longcr during the ‘ year than Summcrsidc enjoys ll a similar service. The boots plying to and from Georgetown give us by no means a direct service, or what Our S present decision is how the interests of the entire Island can be best served by the two available winter steamers under existing conditions. The Summerslde- Tormentine route has not, unfortunately, _ good facilities for embarking or discharg- I ing freight on the mainland side. We would gladly see_this want supplied, and a third boat built and put on that route. It seems clear that two winter boats are equired at this end of the Island and will be needed more and more in the years to _eome.In view of the large expenditure in Vv'estern Canada, it is not Loomuch to ask that the Island should have a third win- ter boat during the four or tive months that the Steam Navigation Company’s boats are necessarily laid up. - THE DELAYED MAILS. We are indeed a patient people and great are our disabilities in being shut olf for ten days from mail communication with the outside world. It is easy to _ understand the reluctance of the authori- \ ties to call up the ice-boat service by the f Capes. Last winter the boats were not at all needed, and in January of the present 1 year the two winter steamers were plying 3 so regularly between Georgetown and ,';,ictou that it was easy to imagine that the old days of long interrupted mails had forever passed away. But our troubles have come again, just at midwinter, and it has become apparent that we cannot rely upon the steamcrs alone. Had it been known that the in- terruption would be so long as it has been, we presume that arrangements would have been made to have the ice- boat service put promptly in operation. It seems necessary that this service shall hereafter be organised and held in con- stant readiness for the times when the steamers are unable to do the work. Tac business and social interests involved are interruption such as has now occurred, and apparently may recur in the winters here- after. New Yom; MARKETS.
