The departure of Rev. G. M. Campbell and Mrs. Campbell this morning causes deep regret in many circles in Charlottetown and through- out Prince Edward Island. Mr. Campbell has not alone been eminent- ly successful as the pastor of the largest Protestant congregation in in this city, but has exerted a wide influence for good in other ways. He has greatly assisted in temperance work, and by his judicious councils and earnest eforts has aided in the promotion of every good work. While a. leader in the Methodist body in Prince Edward Island he was fortu- nate in sustaining most cordial rela- tions with his brother ministers of other creeds. He goes from the capi- tal of Prince Edward Island to the capital citv of New Bruns -vickgwhere he will find a splendid field for his Rue talentsas a preacher and a worker in the cause of righteousness. 'inn Guannlsx joins with the hosts Campbell have tndeaaed themselves during their live years residence in Charlottetown,, .in wishing UIIGIII abundant happiness, usefulness and success in their new home. Today, the 12th of July, is the great Orange anniversary, it is not-, as has been so b some, the an Pwssd y .- lnivofaryouno orare Boyne. where William III defeated James`II that battle took place July lst,l690. On July l2th,l691 another battle;was fought at Anghrim in which the ad- hgr-am.; of J 4mes,led by French officers p were again defeated. ' A while nge we commended the federal Trovernmeut for issuing an _order prohibiting the sale of intoxicat- ing liquors in the militia camps of in- struction. The order was a good one and was obeyed insome cases, but not in alL Complaint is made in the press that at the camp in Laprairie, the order: was openly dis- obeyed, and that a great deal of drunkenness resulted. The London, Ont. News tells that notwithstanding the order liquor was freely and openly sold at the canteens at the London Camp, and quotes a young man as saying that “the Camp was one long drunk.” It is clearly the duty of the Militia Department to enf0rce the excellent order it has issued, not only on moral grounds, but that obedience, which is the foundation .of all dis- cipline, may be observed. The citi- zen soldiery ought to be preserved from such special temptation during the period of instruction _ 1-<-q-i- TnnSSElec1ra will not make hm regular trip to this port on Thursday next as she is being repaired at Picton. The mntality of human concerns ig nowhere more marked than in amateur entertainments. The program was a delightful one in fact one of the concerts well wor.h re- membering. Mr. F. Haszard. jr., opened the concert with a vocal solo, “The Promise or Life.” a high baritone 'or tenor robusto his voice is worthy of earnest cultivation. Miss Cotton fol- lowed with Matteis. “Dear Heart.” Too well known to need comment ctberlhan she was at her best in a very happy selection. The clarinet was very much in evidence in No. 3, the number, a set of variations with brilliant cadenzas, GKC-. While not very pretentious was en- joyable. We expett good readings and careful phrasing from our teachers and the performer was satisfactory in these part culars. "Out on the Deep,” in a vcry deep _key and sung comme il faut with depth ot expression earned the generous ap- plause which succeeded Mr. McLean’s rendition of the song.
