A WINNING GAME, eel CibAd HR IL. ‘] wonder whether your friend will b there tu-ulght, Uharite |’ said ‘Tum Murcheil, vu tucir Woy bo the Goveruut’ a L turk quite u faucy tu the ol Loy, apd the *luissus’ wust be a rich trent. Sill I appear is Lerd C.weu ‘frove wight obly gracivus to me ?’ ‘OF course they'll be there. Mr Swith is.’t the persvu tu leave a stO.e Ub- trened to get a card ; but we'll see pre p.atly.’ ‘Here he is; Pure, Mr. Smith,’ suid Tom, later lo the evening, as he brought a pleasant-looking old man up toCharlie, ‘ Not very flatter- jog to me to be mistaken for him, you’! please observe. lll leave you now with him, aad let you talk uninterrupted Loam- s uire.’ Old Smith had a lot to tell Charlie about Castleton ; he had such a good opinion of Charlie’s intimate friend, Dr. Meredith, that they spent a very pleasant halfsou: chattiog at the ball-room door, among 4 crowd of subs hanging about, upd not ips ¢ ined to venture on the wear and tear of a flirtation with the Valetta be.les. Old Smith was suddenly pulled up iv the middle of a sentence by the recollec- tion of his wife, so he lead off Charlie to be presented. It was rather difficult to get pear them, as Miss Huotingdos-Smith wis surrounded by a crowd of meu, and was fully employed io noting engagements ou her tablets. Charlie had time to note h r many charms before being presented. A perfect figure, fine features, au Immense quantity of beautiful fair hair coiled round a shapely head, and large. glovious biue eyes, go far to make a beauty. She h.d just been dancing, and the flush of exercise and a little excitement gave her an unwonted amount of the apimation she usually so much lacked. Mrs. Hun, as she was ce lled for short by the wags, was very graci us—perhups her fascinating little tricks were rather overdone, but Theodosia soon looked froz- en up again. Her card was quite full, aod Captain Castleton could not by any possibility get a dance. So, when she was led away by her next partner, Charlie took the vacant seat, and submitted himself to be beamed upon by Mrs. Hun, who talked away to him about the leauties they had visited, of the discomforts of the Medi- terranean in geveral, and Malta in partic ular; while Chirlie did not pay much attention to ber talk, for he was being amused by a couple ia a quidriile o ar him—a very young ensigu of his own regi- ment, and a pretty girl of seventeen or 80, who evidently bad made up her mind to thoroughly evjoy her ball, and who looked eo amezed at the affectation of complete boredvess assumed by her partner, as he walked through his figures with the air of a martyr. She was a happy-looking little creature, who evidently could not conceive its being ‘ the thing ’ to have used up all the enjoyment in lite before eigh~ teen—the age of the callow cynic by her side. Charlie was attending much more to this ill-matched couple than Mrs. Hun’s griev- uncer, aod he answered at random to oue or two of her questions aod remarks, ‘ How that nice little girl wants to enx joy herself, but that cub won’t help her,’ suid he, during a pause, involuntarily giv- his thoughts words, and indicating the two spoken of. -Thait’t my youngest diughter. Bessie, Ciptaio ; this is ber first bull, _and she loves duncing very much,’ replied Mrs, Hun, very graciously, aud then she went on to ta-k of Theodosia, and her eager des sire to get back to Luzelden, * She’s so fond of that place.’ How Bessie did enjxy that next dance, when the ensiga gave her up and Charlie epue ber round the room at a pce hardly sui ed to the climate of M.lta. The rooms had got dreadfully hot, so they strolled through the ante-rooms, laughing and chat. ting, and being very pleasant to one an other. Bessie was a nice frank little thing, with pretty brown hair, aod bright browo eyes, not the least like her stately si ter Theo- dusia either in appearance or mauoer, for she and Charlie were friends a:most at once, and quite cvunfidential ia a quarter of an hour. ‘1 seem to kuow you quite well, Cuptiin Caatleton,’ suid she, luughing, ‘ L have beard so much of you at home.’ [ hope they spoke well of me ? ‘{ must not flatter you, but I can assure you ‘ Mr.' harlie’ is a great man to many this is the real Simon of your uocle’s people. It used to be quite | disheartnivg to us ordinary m>rt»ls to hear of such a piece of perfection. Old Mrs. Hicks, at the waterfall is never done of telling how you pulled her Johnny out of the b ook when you were a boy, and gave him measJe, or got them from him, I fore get which. Why, have you not some f.n ts to encourage your fellow-creatures, sir ?? ‘Wait till you know mea little better, gad then ask me that,’ laughed Charlie. ” Wouldu't she b ’ 1; You seem to like Haz iden though, not- ‘withstanding Mos Hicks und me. - Oh, so wach better than this, These countries here are very beautiful, but they | wipt the treshoess that is the great charm fa Bistieh lind-eape, L am so vlad we wre going back soon” we Su they chatted on tir] Bessie said it was tune fer her to be tiken buck to mount. Will you give me another waltz later iu. Miss Bessie, unless your curd ts fall? ’ Fu }! oh, ba; 1S almost eurpry. We fiow’t kuow muy gentlemen bere, and | Tho catches the unst of them.’ ! So Charlie marked bis initials op: osite wo o three mere dances, and he guided ver safely t rough the scramble at supper, nd weds ‘her first buli’ very pleasant in- Jeed ta Bus-ie.
