I 5 In a racent issue The Guardian sn- nount'-ed in its news columns that on the date on which, according to prov- iious advertisement, the allotment of |Prlnce Edward Island shares in the Charles Dalton Black and Silver Fo; Company, Ltd., was cioooa, iiio totoi allotment, amounting to $425,000, was fully subscribed and that the bal- laiioo of szoo, ooo, usted ro foreign investors, was being taken up ropidty throughout the Dominion and the United States. In s little province like ours, whose .total population is less than that of most cities and whose wealth is esti- mated in thousands, instead of mil- lions, the fact that this comparative- ly large sum was poured into an cn- event that deserves more than pass- i_ng notice. We are not, in this reference, con- cerned with the probable possibilities of this particular enterprise, except merely to express the conviction as well as the hope that it will prove to be all that its promoters and its shareholders are looking forward to. What we are concerned with is the immediate and lavish response given to the enterprise and the inferences to be drawn from what is unquestion- ably an event of outstanding im- portance. We infer, in the first place, that our province is comparatively weal- ihyi that there is abundance of capi- tal here to promote any industry that oilers substantial returns. The Dl'0miBe of substantial returns in the case before us was well founded. There was experience to back up the hope. -It looked good from the past history of the fox business and our investors had faith in it. Therefore, they ` invested. ' The name of the original owner of the business had become inextricably' associated with good fox stock. He had the' v°vorld's record in the London, terprise within a few weeks is an market for the best foxsklu and also 'tor tiio gmton number oi boot tox- 3skins_ From this we infer that assur- ance of good quality la the surest foundation upon which any businem can be based and, given this assun ance, any business will prosper. . The lox business might have gone on, as it had done for the thirty years previous, the Dalton fox-skins might bring the highest price in the London market, Charles Dslton’s name might be sought for by fur- risrs the world over and the money _ of Prince Edward Island 'investors might lie rusting in Prince Edward Island Savings Banks, at three per cent, for all time to come, had not all these facts been given to the pub- lic by such well known‘citiZfne aa A. through judicious, intelligent and per- sistent advertising, From this we infer that judicious, intelligent and persistent advertising is s lever that will lift any legiti- mate enterpriso from the dead level to s position in which it can be of use to the world and to its promoters. Seldom in the history of Prince Ed- ward Island has the power of adver- tising been more remarkably shown than in the plain, busincsslike and intelligible campaign carried on by the promoters of this company, the credit for which we understand is due to G. C. Acorn, the advertising manager for Prowse Brothers, Limit- ed. We might mention incidentally the fact that these advertisements ap- peared in newspapers both at home and abroad, including The Guardian, thus ensuring the widest possible pub- licity. We might sum up our inferences briefly ss follows:-Select. s sure en- terprise; acquira a name for honest goods; advertise judicially, intelli- gently and persistently in newspap- ers of known circulation sud success is assured. ‘ cANAnA's Gi:g:NsRosI'r`v. _ .__ _ _ . Victoria Row as regards naval defence is now. the chief issue at bye-elections in Cana- da, and the Canadian Government is ‘proposing an "emergency", provision of some seven _million pounds as a `l` special contidkbutibu to our needs. i-:son or those beers (referring to me lgift of the Federated Malay States) iis utilized in other dependencies by _‘the Imperialist party to stimulate .tho “voluntary” generosity of their 'goverriinent or people. A vigorous organized endeavor is evidently being made to induce, incite or compel all parts ci our Empire to arm for war on land and sea. * * ‘ Now, are we in this defenceless condition? What; is this emergency with which they seck to scare the dollars from their countrymen? What is the meaning of this conspiracy to pump the scare-virus of jingoisrn into the peaceful inhabitants of our Domin- ions and Dependencies. The Pall Mall Gazette objects to colonial representation. The defence of _Imperial interests in European waters, says The,Gazette, should be the ailair of the Mother Navy and full provision should be made for it by the British,Admiralty. The whole t movement towards the union of the Empire for defense will be ruined by the ships provided by the Dominions 'and thc Malay States are absorbed into the Home Guard and made part pf that Navy which the threat of the Triple Alliance keeps clamped to the North Sea and the Mediterranean. Canada, as well as Great Britain, needs to look well to the influences that, under the name of loyalty and patriotism and Imperialism, are drawing her into the maelstrom of ilngoism now rampant in sections of Europe. That. Canada should contri- bute her legitimate share ofthe cost of her own defence and that of her trade routes and should stand by her Imperial mother when danger threat- ens no Canadian will dispute for s, moment, but she has a right, and will exercise it, to resent any at.- tempt. at scaring her into spasmodlc loyalty for the sake of tfding over political crises either at home or in England. l NOTES. ‘ 'N10 “lf Ol 7.000.000 eggs in Phila- delphia in 'tivo days at a uniform price of 24 cents a dossn dsmorallz- ed the local egg corner.
