Ason of Mr. James Brown, C. E., was drowned at North River yesterday evening. Mr. Brown has been engaged for the past few days répairing the North River Bridge. His son accompanie! him to the work yesterday, and, in the evening, asked leave-to go tishing around the shore. Permission was granted, but from that tine nothing was heard of the boy. His hat was found floating in the river at the north side of the bridge. An immedi- ate but unsuccessful search was made for his body. In the evening all hopes of his re- covery were despaired of. The river was dragged to-day, but the body was not recov- ered. The drowned boy was abont fourteen years of age. — es Crowded Gaols in Russia. A statement has just been published at St. Petersburg shewing something of the present overcrowded condition of the Rus- sian gaols. Jt appears that besides the establishment in connection with the mines in Siberia, there are altogether eleven con- vict prisons in the empire. That at Irkutusk, which according to the regula- tions should only contain 1,500, 1s now eccupied by 2,000. Two prisons the Charkoff Government constructed, ene for 450 and the others for 475 prisoners, con- iain respectively 600 and 509 unfortunate convicts.
