(uick Worx.—The scbr Mary E, of Cardigan begas loading at Murray River, on Monday the 29th, ult., and finished the eame day with a general assorted cargo, consisting of lumber, cattle, sheep, fowl, butier, hay and about 500 bushels of new potatoes, thus indicating the enterprise, push and energy of the farmers and ship- per, Wm Lamont, Esq , who is running a successful and prosperous mercantile branch at Murray River in connection with his store at Eldon. The Mary E sailed from Murray River on Tuesday morning at 7,and at 3 o’clock Wednesday evening sie was lying peacefully at anchor in the placid waters of St. Pierre, making the expeditions voyage from the anticipat~ ed “railway terminus” at Murray River to ber port of destinatiin, St. Pierre, in the short and unprecedented espace of 32 hours, or in other words 56 hours from the time she began loaling, until she was safe- ly anchored in Miquelon. Skipper Mark Bonnell was atthe wheel, and knowing that be hd a good and substantial schoon- er, able and competent crew, genial and level-headed supercargo (A. A. McDonald) besides being endowed with more tban ordinary nautical ability, with pueh, pluck and perseverance as his motive, punched her from port to port like a bullet.—Com. iiidlaniitee A Pieasant Excursion.—By way of celebrating Labor Day in a fitting manner, Thomas Kickham, Esq , of Souris West, decided to give his beautiful new three masted schooner, “‘Ark Light,” ,her trial trip. Shortly before leaving he extended @ general invitation to his friends, aud they are legion, for the excursion. Although the word went abroad only a short time before fesailing a party of about two hundred repaired to the vessel. Needless to say the fair sex was well represented. Always mindful of the comfort of his guests, M>. Kickham took care to provide a violin for the amusement of the company. The start was made abcut 3 p. m,and under the ekilfnl management of the commander, Capt. Alex. Bushy, ably assisted by such veteran mariners as Capts, Lavie,Lannigan and Leslie, no time was lost ip getting away. The veesel behaved admirably, and although the wind was light, she promptly replied taoevery movement ofthe helm. Half an bour or sc after leaving the wharf the music began, and the boys and girls tripped the tight fantastic. This was kept up with g est «enthusiasm till about mid- night when our gallant ship returned and landed all safely on Knight’s wharf, where three rousing cheer- were givenfor the euccess of the “ Ark Light, ’ and the generosity of the owner, Mr Kickham. Fort de Prance, Martinique, is the strongest fortified point the French own in America. It is both a military and naval station, and a fort was erected on a mountain top there years ago, which has since been improved and strength- ened by some of the most modern guns known in warfare During the civil war the United States cruiser Kearsarge chased the Con. federate blockade runner Alabama inte the harbor, and was on the point of opening fire on her when the authorities forbade it. Here they remained for some time, and during astormy night the Alabama slipped out and disappeared in the Caribbean sea. Several times the place has been bad- ly damaged by tropical cyclones, during which hundreds lost their lives. It is noted as being the birthplace of the Empress Josephine; a life size piece of statuary of her adorns the principal plaza.
