Dum- my’: king was played. and de- clarer automatically discarded a low club. He then cashed the ace and king oi trumps. learning that .West had started with three cards in the trump suit. This was scarce- ly the sort of break to cause wall- ing 'or gna-shing of teeth-in fact. it- was a quite normal break — but. coupled with the situation in spades. the trump distribution was istali For now, when South ‘ tried to cash the ace and king of spades. to unblock that suit (he could discard the spade queen on the diamond sci, West swooped down on the s and spade lead with his nine of trumps. If South had thought for one small moment before playing to the first. trick, he might have seen how absurd it would be to discard a club on a high diamond. The situation fairly screamed for a spade discard from the closed hand! Then it would be almost chlidishly simple to cash the ace and king of trumps. and. seeing the break, to lay down (unblock) only the spade ace. Now dum- my‘s trump queen would provide entry; South would discard his last blocking spade on dummys remaining high diamond - and run the spade suit. Obviously. there was far less danger that West would ruff the iirst spade than that he could // / So Bwiity never lost a chance to _w11tch these new neighbors with the pretty coats oi tan and white Swifty took notice. And when thgv ran they made those puzzling White flashes. At least some of them did. "They are Pronghorn the Ante- lope and his iriends." a Ground Squirrel had told them as he dived into his underground home. War away Pronghorn and his band stopped and turned to look back. They couldn't. see the two Coyotes lying low in the grass. and after a while began grazing. all hut Pronghorn. He kept watch. After a while another took his place. "Anyway we know now who they are and that they make those flashes." said Young Coyote. "But We don't know how they do it. and I wonder." said Swifiy. ‘It is something to find out," said Young Coyote. “I am going to," replied Swifty. “l-low?" asked her mate. "I don't"know, but I'll find a may," replied Swiity. "It is nothing you have to find out." said Young Coyote. "Yes. it is.“ reiorted switty. "What good will it do you to find out?" asked Youngfloyote. “I don't know except that it will satisfy my curiosity, I always feel better when that is done. Anyway a wise Wolf knows all that can be known about her neighbors," de- clared S-wvifty. 5o Swiity never lost s chance to watch these new neighbors with the pretty coats o! tan and white. with the long legs and big dark eyes. and with the queer horns of shining black. Often when Mr. Sun was shining his brightest she woul see those flashes of white so far away that she could not see the ones who made them. She had learned by this time that they usually- meant that the Antelope was excited or startled. Perhaps they were sig- nalling to other Antelopes, whom she could not see. as ships signal each other at night by blinking lights. But how was it done? The longer she wondered about it the more she wanted to know. It usually is that way with curiosity. Then one day when she was lying just lnsidelthe doorway o! her home. resting. the band of Anielopes wandered. toward her until at lest they nvere grazing all around her den, ‘not knowing it was there. Presently Pronghorn stood back to her only a few feet away; 0n eoch side oi his rather short pointed tail was a large white patch. but seeming no whiter than other white patches on that tan coat. Then. while she was looking at those patches. suddenly all th_e white hairs ot which they were formed. the outcr ones longest, stood on end in the bright sunlight; making a star- tling white flash as Pronghorn bounded away. Something 'had startled him. A “So that is how it is done. by suddenly raising all those white hairs on those two white patches beside his tail! Now I know!" ex- claimed Swliiy hsppily. as she went outside to watch those white flashes grow smaller snd smaller in the distance. Electrical contractor ‘WIRING AND REPAIRING ERNEST IL RAMSAY.
