is the visit to the steamer of the custom
house oiilcers and the examination of
the baggage of the passengers. Many a
readable yarn might be told of the
various subterfuges reorted to by these
passengers in an effort to “smuggle”
some dutiable article scross the border,
and it need not be said that these schemes
are oftimes successful. But this article
is already too long, and I must reserve

aboard was seasick, including myself.
We preceded the steamer Halifax up the ‘
harbor, and were interested in the work-
ing of the searchlight. Friday we visit-
ed the provincial building and were _re-
ceived kindly by the provincial auditor
and Miss Smith, stenographer in the
legislative library, who presented us
with several souvenirs. The afternoon
we spent at the market. Saturday we
strolled through Victoria park, which is
beautiful in its naturalness with its drive
along the shore.
There was but little to do Sunday ex-
cept to go to church. Every thing:inclu-
ding the railroad, is at a stand still. Mon-
day we drove in a barouche to the Chif
house, on the Gulf of St. Lawrence. The
railroad is a little antiquated and slow.
The first day ye saw the funeral of the'
cliief of the fire department. It is a cus-
tom that no women attend a funeral
not even of her own husband. The cas-
ket was ou a Concord wagon banked with
flowers and drawn by associates _and
followed. by members of organizations
with which deceased was connected.
At the hotel I ran across D W Morrise}'»
of Seattle, \Vash., a neighbor of
David Bruce, son of ex-Mayor A. _B.
Bruce who is spending the 'summer with
his family on the island, also niet a Mr.
Gray, a buyer of lobsters for an English

to-day, the death of Mrs. Roderick Mc-
` Kinuon, of D;Sable, which occurred on
Sunday, the 19th inst., after a few weeks
