He subsequently seized the schooner Minnie J owned by the Mooroe family, for having brought the contraband goods, and towed her to Canso for safe keeping. White Haven has the reputatio. | t being the smugglers’ paradise. Although a strong guard was placed on the seized schooner an ‘effort was made by parties from the shore to recapture her duriug the night. Tent pins are mostly made of white oak. They must be of tough wood to stand the hard knocks to which they are subjected. They are made in lengths of 16 and 24 inches. Made of hard wood as they are they are yet liable to be broken, and they are also lost. Even in peace the consumption of tent pins is considerable. A manufacturer of tents might carry in stock 5,000 or 10,000 tent pins) In war times the demand is of course far greater. Like many other manufactured articles of wood, tent pins are made in the west, in factories in proximity to the forests whence the supplies of wood are drawn.—New York Sun. oo Piles Cured w vithout the Knife Teternoxe 98. Astronomers gx nerally now admit that the more recent studies of the planets Mercury and Venus tend to con- firm Schiaparelli’s opinion, advanced some years ago, that both of them turn on their axes once while re volving about the sun. This, however, is a very difficult point to settle with cert: ainty, the reason given for this being, and very plausibly, that the evidence rests upon observation of the exceedingly faint markings upon the disks of the planets, the fact being that very few as- tronomers have ever seen them at all with distinctness,,and only those who have made a most persistent study of them and are favored with vision espe- cially sensitive to such details are com- petent to express an opinion as to their correct Interpretation. It is argued that if, as held by some, the rotation and revolution periods are the same be a correct opinion, then the climatic conditions of the two planets must be most remarkable. Furthermore, our moon always shows the same face to the earth and no knowledge exists of the hidden part, nor have tke supposed inhabitants of that concealed hemi- sphere ever seen the earth. This, how- ever, is of no importance to them, as the earth is not the source of light, heat and life on the moon. All parts of the moon are brought under the sun’s influence just as all parts of the earth, though the day and night are 14 times as long as on the earth. But how it must be on a planet which has one side only exposed to the sun, astronomers can Bive no answer. —Exchange. Tar popular institntion the Charlotte~ town Business College and Writing Aca~ demy, of which Mr. L. B. Miller is the Principsl, re-opens for the fall session cn the 15th inst., with the prospect of a Jarge attendance of pnpile. Wecan co = fidently recommend this College to those of our young people who wish to acquire a thorough and practical knowledge <f bookkeeping and: ll other branches of a complete business course, as the instruce tiou imparted by Mr. Miller and his staft is of the highest character, nnd the grad- uates have 4been wonderfully successful wherever they have gone. They ae sought after by business men as buxk- keepers, stenOgrapbers and typewriters, and to fill various other positions in mer- cantile offices. Outoftbe seventy—eight students in the College last term, for in- stance, only five are at present un m- ploved, the l-st one going to Mesers.N. & B, Kattenbury, in the person of Mr. Bo’s lum, of Lot 48. Of the five above re~ ferred to,three do not desire employment, althaugh they took the commercial course. This shows that graduates from the €har- lottetown Business College experience no difficulty in securing situations. Messrs. Rattenbury, above named, advertised for a mao, and had a great many applications, but none of them proved satisfactory, and they aftewards went to Principal Miller and asked bim for a man. Mr. Miller sent them Mr. Bollum, who gives great ratisfaction, his training having f{ tted him forthe work required of him. If vou want your sons or daughters to receive § thorough business education, send them to the Charlottetown Business College, where they will secure it in good shape.—S’side Journal. _ We are having a big MY STORE IS A GRAND VWutual Benefit Store The lower our prices the more customers we have, more customers, the more goods sold, The more goods sold the more profit. our Benefit and Ours we sell goods at the LOWEST POSSIBLE FIGURE A GREAT SALE—come and So for g sale learn our prices.
