The term of engagement will be three years, with a possibility of re-engagement at increased pay. Promotion will be by merit and commissions will be obtainable from the ranks. There are three classes of troopers, first, second, and third. Recruitsjmust enter as third-class troop- ers, whose pay will be $1.21 per diem. to commence on attestation in South Africa Promotion will be from one class to the next higher, and so on. Second class troopers will receive $1.46 a day; first- class $1.70; Corporals $1.82; second-class Sergeant $1.94; Sergeants $2.19; Staff Ser- geans $2.43, and Superintendant Warrant Oflicer $3.65 as dailv pay. Men desirous of marrying in 'South Africa must first obtain the sanction of the Omcer com- manding, and then will be entitled to an extra allowance of 73 cents a day. On completion of three year`s service 9. man may, if approved, re-engage at an increase of six centsa day, and at the end of five years at an increase of 1.2 cents a day for every additional year until a total of 48 cents a day is reached. Ratious,horse, forage, equipment, arms, quarters and medical attendance are supplied free. Discharge from the service may be purchased, with consent of the command- ing officer for £20 in the first year, £15 during the second year and £10 during the third year. Other provisions relate to transfer to the reserve, in which the man must reside for seven years in South Africa, being free to pursue his ordinary calling, but always liable to he called out for service if required. When called out for his regular ten days training yearly, or for service hee wiil receive full pay, but otherwise the reservist’s pay will be $4.86 per month. Reservists desiring to settle on lands will be given special privileges. Leave of absence will be granted to all ranks forone month out of each year. After four years without leave, six months leave with full pay will be granted. Those enlisting will be given free trans- port to South Africa; but will be liable to further medical examination, and to be tested in riding' and shooting on arrival. Those not accepted will be given free passage home, provided there has been no misconduct, misrepresentation or serious fault on their part. To those who enter the service, and retire after live years a free passage home will be given. In selecting candidates for enlisment preferences will be given: 1. To men who have served in South Africa.. 2. Men who have served in the permanent force orin N. W. Mounted Police. 3. Men who have done three consecutive years train- ing. 4. Hen who have served in the R. C. Regt. of lnfantry. 5. Men who hav served in the Infantry or Garrison Artil- lery of the ',Active Militia. 6. Other ap- plieante. After the date of attestation here until arrival inSouth Africa the pay of men will be 24 cents a. day with railway fares and subsistence. If a sufficient number enlist in Canada a special transport will be provided. Otherwise troops will proceed by third-class passage via England. LoNDoN, January 25.-The Globe' re- viewing American sympathy with Great Britain on the death of Queen Victoria and referring tothe refusal of Mayor Van Wyck of New York to lower the flag over I the city hall says: “The solitary exception to this attitude of sympathy' and respect is to be regard ed as a. matter of congratu- lation rather than of regret. It is a high compliment that the memory of the good andfpure Queen should be unsullied by any recognition on the part of Tsmmany hall and-its creatures.” The St. James Gazette says Mf.
