SIR:-I understanil-theresson there is subsidy to help to ply the extra o0st of eoal. The Comp tuy cannot of course be expected to run their steamer at a loss as they did last year, no dividend I am told having been earned, and the the boat is of course lessened by each' not only for the large number people ac- commodated by this service, but also for the tradf of the Town. S-trely the Go- vernment are not acting wisely in de~ $350 which I un-‘lerstand is all the Com~. pany asks. If the Government ls so hard subcribe then. n :nut ani have the service adding it is not vary creditable to our legislatotstohivs sham tm do so. Yours etc. LIBERAL. ‘ Thsabive stxte'n::1t,w: tak: i‘», pre' sents the Inland Nsvigttion Compiny’s piblic thit the other side should the serviceof the J acqu as Cirtier between th s portaud Orwell and Victoria respec- tively. This would represent th a interest on $33,001) at 4p:r cant, the rate at which _fthe Gavernmsnt can ` money. `Whatthe presentvalue of tiie Biffle# ,may be we do not pretend to guess but it would certainly be but apart of such capital sum. It hztabeen freely st tted- that the Com - pany insisted upon the subsidy being in- creased to $3,001)for the season, (not 82,650 as' Liberal would im-ply.) Moreover, as the agreement- between the Government and the Compsny his been running from year to year, and as the sharp advance in the price of coal took place six _months ago, the` contention is put forward by friends of the Gavsrnm :nt that the' Com- pany, if intending to claim more subsidy on account of the increased cost of fuel onghttohave made its claim last, fall. Then a new agreement might. have been made, or failing that, the Government could have secured another boat for the _ service. The _.complaint is that- almost at the opening of navigation made a claim for $600 additional subsidy. and failing to get it refuse to run the boat. ` Moreover complaint is made' 'that the Company, while refusing to start. its boat has been for weeks receiving at its ware-‘ houses goods for transportation to both Orwell and Victoria, and in that regard has seriously disappointed and incom- moded the owners and consignees of such freight, incurring also a liability for the delay. Be this as it may, there can be no doubt that between the Government and the Company the public interest is suffer- ing very severely, andthe deadlock ought to be broken without further delay. There is perhaps no season of the year when the steamer is more needed on this route' .than at the time of the opening of spring navigation, as at that time for several have the advantage of railway. In this connection 'it is clear that the Govern- ment ought not to have left the matter open to the last moment, but should have. either closed a definite contract with the Inland Navigation Oqpipany, or that, have months ago. secured boat It is to the Government and not"tb;' any Comp my that the people look, and _ _ _ A _v; IND UAH GUBEII ' - IS YOUR HUSBAND, BROTHER FATHER, r ia) ti yu I relatives aiicted we tlzr Disiefe ci Drunken- ness_ ?Withhave a sure cure which can be given wxrn or wrrnour the know- ledge o_f the patent.
