Al- though women today have the right to vote, we con- tinue to fight a centuries- old battle for living wages and improved working con- ditions. A pamphlet pub- lished recently by the PEI Advisory Council on the Sta- tus of Women titled “The Pay Gap Between Women and Men” points out a stag- gering difference between the earning levels of women and for example, in health care, women earn 29 cents the work, a field dominated by on dollar; in clerical women, women earn 67 cents on the dollar. This is the harsh reality of discrimina- tion. There are two impor- tant ways in which we can combat this discrimination: these are pay equity legisla- tion can reduce the pay gap to the point where, accord- ing to the Council on the Status of women’s pamphlet, women would earn 75-80 per- cent of what men earn. How- ever, if the pay gap is to be completely closed, women must step up their entry into non-traditional occupations. I can remember clearly the day when IT realized that, tal- ented or intelligent I may be, bright other young women may be, I and they will well no matter how and how talented and never by as compen- sated for our talent and in- telligence as our male coun- terparts will be. UNLESS... the realization was accompa- nied by hope: this need not be the case, if we are will- ing to make some changes and insist upon recognition of our rights. This realiza- tion prompted me to find out more about the women’s movement and subsequently to join. In the process, T have met many wonderful women of all ages and circumstances, all of whom have the same hope that I have, and all of whom have found great hap- piness in adding their light to the sum of light. now is the time in our lives to make the connections with each other and with older and younger women, for later on our time will be swallowed up by many other obligations which may well crowd out our recogni- WEEK Cont. on page 13 UPEI wins animal by Kaberi Dasgupta “Be it resolved that med- ical research on animals be abolished”’ the resolu- tion debated by teams from UPEI and Holland College on March 8, 1988. On the team from Holland college was were Trina Burho and Isabel Scott while UPEI was repre- sented by Colin Piercy and Lisa Murphy. The debate took place appropriately (or inappropri- ately!) at the Vet College. The UPEI team defended the resolution, citing the inhu- manity of product tests such as the Praize test which is used to assess the of human eye irritation po- degree tentially caused by a prod- uct,,using the eyes of bar- rits. Record Review by Dawnne Chappelle YES FOLKS! THEY are back, and with gusto. Deja Voodoo have returned with their latest album (what do you MEAN jyou’ve never heard of their FIRST al- bum?!?!) and it’s destined to become a hit. How can you miss with titles like ‘“*Mon- sters in My Garage”’, ‘‘More Songs About Monsters and ° Food”, and “I Want to Come Back From the World of LSD”. My personal favorite is “Van Gogh’s Ear”, but I only like it for the title. The. group runs along the same lines as Weird Al Yanckovich, parodying such groups as The Monkees, Jan and Dean, and the late great man himself, Elvis Presley: The music sounds exactly like the name of the group weird! The music is noth- ing special, unless, of coursé; you happen to like a_ mix ture of country, blues, and psychedelic punk... all in oné song. The album itself is enti tled, appropriately, I might add, “The Worst of Dejé Voodoo”’. Of course, the only reason they did that is because “no one else has done it”. This is good, be cause I really don’t think the world could handle any more! 3 SB = Page 12 == March 17th 1988
