The unfortunate Isle of Man, | that plesantly situated spot in the midst | ofthe Irish Channel, is thus again mace the point of disputation amongst | es of deceased naturalists. Two! reasons have prominently brought the | 1 island into mentionia | It is| i n to possess a breed of cats | } So the stump of one, in was an Cxp ment ; by the creation aiseipi above-mentions connection with this discussion. Weil know which, like the Guinea pig, have no| ippendage; but that circum-—| e mar ably be accounted | In the Northern part of Arrica,as as in Spain, the so-called Barbary | no tails, and as many of the | ships of the Armada were wrecked in| the [rish Channel, it is natural to sup-/| pose that one or more cats (and a ship| rarely is without some on board) may, with their proverbial nine lives, have | reached the island, and have propaga | ted a breed found in no other part of the British Isles. However, the deriva- stunt for. well reas cats have tien ofthe namo “Man” in connection | with the isle is the chief point of argu ment. The island was known to the} ancients as “Mona,” and Darwinians| might jump to the conclusion that it was so called from. the} Spanish word mona, a monkey. | It has frequently been called the| “Island of Monkeys.’ But the ancient | name of the island had the penuligmate| short, whereas the Spanish wor tor | monkey is long ; hence it may be more fairly premised that the word came from the Greek—monos,a monk, as the island was well known to have been a refuge for anchori‘es. To account for the modern appellation two derivatives sug- gest themselyes, First, “Man” may with great prebability be considered to be u corruption of the word mona, mon, man, or it may be a corruption of man- nin, a little island—by which it was known to the early Britons, and which we find Latinized into mauavia by Orosius. The absurdity ot alluding to the Mona of Tacitus as the present Isle of Man is ridiculous; for we are told by Suetonius that his men sWam out and charged the island. Now no one can believe that he could have persuaded even ‘his choicest uuXiliaries, even his gallant 11th,” to swim the sixty miles of water which separate “Man” from the mainland. The Mona of Tacitus was Anglesey, sometimes known as Southern Mona, also a refuge from the Druids of old, a circumstance which favors the deriva- tion of the word from the Greek, rather than the Spanish source. Darwin was by no means the originator of this theory in connection with the Isle of Man, as Snorrwich, an ancient bard, traces our development from the noble simi through the quadrumana into man — The Week. ann oe Oleomargarine. Dairy farmers and others not interest- ed in its manufacture and sale, have said several times that oleomargarine must go. But it hes aot gone. A committee of the United States senate has been investigating this matter, and according to their report the bogus batter is un- suspectingly consumed by agreat part of the people ofthe States. This the dairymen are plentifully aware of. The lessening demand for the pure article is to them sufficient evidence that their trade is in great danger. Hence their uttempt to drive out of market this base imitator. The job they have under- taken though is no easy one. What it is made ofand how it is made, have been set forth by the senate committee, and all who have read have concluded, that as an article of diet, it is not to be desired. Yet so much like the real is the bogus, that it has been devoured in enormous quan- tities by the people, and these same people have been well satisfied up to this time. But now that the investigat- ing committee, has told them that they have been using this terrible oleomar- gurine right along, they begin to feel sick. The unctuous substance which, in their ignorance, they imagined came direct from the finest Jerseys, has net, after all, been butter, but oleomargarine direct from the factory, whore such re- fuse as cannot be utilized inthe manu. facture ef car axle grease is so deftly turned to profit. And they have re- solved that henceforward they shall not bedeceived.
