The Departiiieitt of Education pro- vided financial assistance The Kinette Club contributed gener- ously in furitisitint.:s and equip-l iiicnt. and everything was begin- ning to shape up well. i Much thought had been given to? a suitable teacher for such a class. The Parents Association had heard aboitt the work of one, Miss Sue llolictt, and they decided to write in iicr to see if site knew of anyone vtiioin she could recommend as tcaclier. They were indeed more fortunate than they had anticipat- cd when Miss Hollett, herself. de- cidcd to come and organize the school. She proved to be the ideal person for this important work. She had bccn a former nursery school to.-icitcr. and received her training at the institute of Child Study at the University of To- ronto. She also had considerable experience in establishing pro- ;1l'tlmS for trainable children. Furlhcrittttie. she had just com- pleted a three month study of spec- ial class-cs and institutions in the United States before coming to (Iii.-irlottetown. BOARD APPOINTED .. Also the children had visit- ed the school with their parents before the opening day. PERSONAL ATTENTION Each child is receiving personal attention. according to his needs. and through creative play culp- ment. development of finger dex- terity and muscular co-ordination is being aided. the span of attent- ion increased. and the children are 'expericncing joy in being able to complete it task. Emphasis is being placed on the development of speech and music is an import- ant part of the program. A child sometimes experiments with ords for the first time, when he s re- laxed and happy in it music circle. It takes time and patience to teach children who are retarded and progress is often slow. They are taught to function at -their own mental level. With consistent train- ing they will, in time. be capable of looking after their own personal needs. By learning to get along with others they will find life in the community more pleasant and their lives will be more useful Parents and teacher are work- ing together in an effort to estab- lish relations and create hobbies in the home, whereby the children will learn to use their leisure hours more constructively. lliiss Hollett, during her stay in ' Charlottetown. has accomplished a great deal. The foundation has been well laid and a good teacher- parent association established She has made many visits to the homes of retarded children. has talked over many problems with parents and has instituted many rules of routine which have left the parents in a better position to understand and cope with the particular pro- blems of the children. WORK IN GOOD HANDS Feeling that her work of organ- ization was completed here. sho' has now gone to establish a amiliar school in Dartmouth. The local board feels that she has left the work in good hands - those of Miss Jacqueline Cummiskey who has been associated with Miss Hollett in the school-since September of last year. It is thought that be- cause she is a graduate of Prince of Wales College. because of her experience in a class of a similar nature in Montreal for one year and also because of her teaching at the provincial school with Miss Hollett. Miss Cummiskey is well fitted and qualified for the posit- ion. Site is an intelligent and IC- comvlished young lady who is deeply interested in the problems of retarded children. Her ability as a musician will stand her in good stand as music has proved an im- portant factor in the instruction of such children. She will continue to hold weekly conferences with Dr. Muicoim Beck, who spares neither time nor energy in the interest of these children.
