" » Gentlemen: ' At the request of a large number of the electors I have decided to contest the District in the Liberal-Conservative interest. As the result Vof the General Election no farmer has been returned to voice the views of agriculturists either in Opposition caucus or from the Opposition side of the House. ' I do not think this satisfactory nor do I think it was the intention of the electors that nine-tenths of the electorate should be unre- presented in the counsels of the Opposition and in the most important debates in the House. ' ' It is more important, in my opinion, that the farmers should have atleast one of them- selves in the House in the Opposition than that there be a dozen sitting behind the Pre- mier whose admitted policy already is to seek new means of raising revenue and who is looking to the farmers to provide the money. \'=""" If elected VI shall make it my business to _ look after the interests of farmers both in the House and in the Liberal-Conservative caucus. _ _This is the first time in the history of Prince Edward Island that one of the two great parties has been without a farmer member in the Legislature. _ _ The necessity and desirability of remedy- ing this state of affairs needs no elaboration ‘on my part; it must appeal to every farmer in_the_ province, and I trust the farfmers of this District in their own interests will real- ize their own responsibility in the matter. __ In _.the _brief period between nomination and election there will, I regret, be no time for me to see all the electors personally, so I take this means of asking you to safeguard your own interests and to show your disap- proval of a party which obtained powerlby reckless promises and _other questionable n_ieansi‘ by casting your ballot for me on Elec- tion Day, Friday, October 3. The Exhibit this year is not as large as formerly but the quality has great- ly improved, especially in the fruit classes where the competition was very keen and in the butter, floricul- ture and household science depart- ments the classes were well filled. After a statement has been given to the people it w_ill then be the duty of the government to try and provide some measures for meeting the situa- tion." It will be observed that the Patriot at 4 o'clock In the afternoon was not in a position to ascertain “the correct financial condltion,” yet our contem- porary informs us yesterday that on that same evening it’s editor “astound ed the audience (at Irishtown) by pro- ducing a statement signed by Mr. John Anderson, Provincial Auditor, dated Sept 30 which showed,etc.,etc." How can the editor of the Patriot, who is himself a member of the gov- ernment, reconcile these two state- ments? On the face of it, it is an old- missloii that the document pro- duced at the Irlshtown meeting docs not show the correct financial condition of the province to Sept 9th but is merely, as the Provincial Audit- or states, a "record of the receipts and expenditures" for the period in ques- tion. It is also very evidently a docu- ment prepared expressly' for the cam- paign in First Queen's and sprung sud* denly upon the people in order that it might prejudice the claims of Mr. Wigmore in the election.
