THE DAILY EXAMINER, CHARLOT CETOWN, NOVEMBER 19 18)7 | rene GORVOM HIGHLANDYRS AT | DARGAL, [From the Witness’) Oh, gallant Gordons, tried and true, For evermore renowned, Who on Dargai’s fatal ridge Your former valor crowned. "Twas vours to add a lustre bright lo the annals of the brave, Who in that fierce and deadly fray First found a soldiers grave. Oh, Ghourkas, Dorsets, Derbyshires, Your valor was pot vain, For though the ridge you did not wir, Your bodies strewed the plain. *T was then brave Kempster called a'ou’, And ordered to the fron?, The kilred Gordon Highland nren To beer the battle’s brunt. And when Mathias, wise and bol, His final order gave, No doubt was in his martial tone, *T'wes vours the day to save. ‘Men of the Gordon Highlanders, Our general save that post Must, ere this day is past, be ours Whatever be the cost. > *And to him vow I here reply, For I kwow and truly feel, The Gordos Highlanders will tak, That ridge with British steel.’ he charge was made across the plain, And while the ballets hailed, Your gallant ranks held bravely up, Their courage never quailed. To cheer you on,a goed old strain The pipers blithely played, The Gordon’s tune*Cock of the Norvh,’ As heard at each parade. And soon upon thet ‘erried ridge, Your colors boldly wave In triumph o’er your beaten foe, Who fi-d their lives to save. But ere the summit you have gaired, One hevo in your throng Did make for evermcre a name In story and in song. Like Witherimgton, af ancient ferme, Brave Findlater played on His war-pipe shrill, altho’ his legs Were shattered to the boue. Then high among your kilted revs, W here every man was brave, First honor give that piper true; Who bied, but played his stave. Jonx McDevw ap. Montreal, Nov. 15, 1897. carefully stored.
