Those who have lived the heppiest lives since their bonds were loosed, are those who have walked softly with their God, realizing the horrible nature of the pit from which they have been lifted and that nothing but the constant dependence on God can keep them from falling again therein. Such men have not only been kept themselves, but they have been useful in leading others out of bondage into liberty, even the liberty of the children of God, ~o When, a few years ago, the question was asked Sir Leonard Tilley: “If you abolish the liquor trafic, how will the Government raise the revenue?” he pointed to the St. Jobn fire and asked, ‘*Was it a prefitable transaction to have twenty millions of pro- perty destroyed in. order to reap five mil- lions of insurancs? la the same way it is not profitable to equander twenty millions of dollars of liquor in order that the Gov ernment may receive a revenue of four or five mil'ions. A fatal panic occurred a few evenings ago in the church of Torre Annunziata at Naples. During the services, which were attended by a very large number of per- sons, part of the draperies about the altar was blown against a lighted candle. The flames spread with great rapidity and the congregation made a mad rush for the oors. The wildest excitement prevailed, and women and children were thrown to the floor and trampled upon. The tire was quickly extinguished, and when some sem- blance of order was restored it was found that eight women and five children had been crushed to death, while hundreds of others had been mcre or Jess seriously in- jured, Commendable. ao a not consistent with the high character of Syrup of Figs are pur 1 avoided by the Cal F ig Syrap iene — 2 acts geutly on the kidneys, liver and bewels, cleaning the system effectually, but it is not a cure-all and makes no pretension that every bottle will not substantiate. . ee _ eg * 3 ILL commence the season's work by leaving Halifax for Charlottetown about the Ist of May, and every Monday after through the season.
