B. McLellan. In striking contrast with the Liberal troubles were the united and barmenious nominations of the Conservative candi- dates. In union and energy there is strength. dhe Liberals snatched victory out ,of Conservative disunion in 1896. In 1900 the Conservatives wi'l poll their ewn normal msjerity, and add to it many disgusied Liberal vetes. It looks as if Prince Bdward Isjand would be the ban~ ‘ner Conservative Province. “a THE DAILY EXAMINER | aC SEPTEMBER 17, 1900 aoe, . A FALLAOIOUS ARGUMENT, THE main argument of Mesare. Atthe iustigation of most twice as great asthe pernentage of Sir Wilfrid, no doubt, the Liberals of increase from the United States during | Manitoba kept it alive for the purpose of the same period,—the Canadiana increase helping Sir Wilfrid into public life. These F PERKIN being 52.65 per cent. and the United States increase 27.10 per cent.; whereas in the last four years under Tarte, Laurier & Co., the per cent- age of increase in exports from Canada has been almost the same as that of the United States exports, the difference being slightly in favor of the States. In view of these figures and in view of the fact that British public opinion has been, owing to events outside of politice, more fuvorable towards Cenada in recent years than in former years, the fallacy of the arguments of Mesers Field- iog and Paterson must be epparent to all, sity ineiiealisaiiiaiaasiattiatis tal sai THE CONVENTIONS. Art length the Liberals have all their men in the field in this province. The tiret impression of the onlooker is one of weakness. They have had two coaventians in King’s—the ordinary and the general paiehirg operation, The pitches do .ot adhere any better now than before the last Dundas assembly. The casual opinion, and it has now ripen- ed into conviction, is that Hughes is @ weak candidate. In East Queen’s no generel & ) serious’man ever took the candidature of Mr. McKinnon seriously, He is merely there to prevent Mr. Martin’s eleco tion by acclamation. In West Queen’s, the doughty knight of demo. cracy, proud of his title, is fightimg for his life against Mr. Stewart, whose armor is the strong one of justice and truth. “T brice armed is he who hath his quarrel juet.” In East Prince, J. H, Mr. Bell is again on the boards—they could not well throw him overboard. It is an open secret taat they are sick of him generally and expect his defeat. In ‘facts are well knewa, and Mr. Fielding must thick that P. B. Ielanders have no memery when he makes statements like these. It is proverbial of the Liberal party to makestatements inconsistent with the facts. They made so many assump: tions and erroneous statements that they do not now wish toreferto them. They must, however, remember that the elec- tors have memories, and they will not permit either Davies or Fielding or Patere eon to draw the bow ata venture much longer. Let the right horse be saddled. The Liberals must bear the blame of iotro~ ducing the school question into Canadian politice and of refusing to settle so long as the Conservatives remaiced in power. If, they afterwards setiled it, it was because they held the trump card with the ace of Greenway in their right hand. Neither Sir Wilfrid Laurier nor bis as- sociates deserve any credit in the matter. They simply extinguished the fire which they had kindle’. G. E. Foster and T. R. Whitney were en- thusiatically welcom«d by a large crowd at Belleville, Ontario. The leadere were escorted by a long procession, including several bands, through profusely decora- ted streets to the market equare, where the gathering dispersed for lunch. In the afternocn 5,600 people gathered in the Agricultural Park, where speeches were delivered amidet the greateat enthusiagm. —Speaking at the opening of the Three Rivers Exbibition on Wednesday, Sir Wil- frid Laurier said Le hoped soon to see the “emoke of large factories” asceeding from thet region. This is cheering talk : it ie the talk of the Conservatives afcer the inauguration of the National Policy. But then such words called forth the ridicule of the apostles of free trade. But, as the Star remarks, the National Policy remains and the prophecies ot the Con~ servatives are repeated and justified by their old opponen te. —Old Liberal to Conservative candi- date: “Come here, sir. You are Mr. So-and«so. Well, I’ve always been a Lib- eral, and by the way you pass me along you don’t expect a vote from me. Bat you'll get mine and my two sons, al! the same. I thought the present party would have done something they promised to do when they gotin. They have had four years now to try, and have shamefully failed. I’ve done of them. Ceunt on us for turee votes, and don’t thank us. Honest men can do no less, Good day.” This is One of the experiences our candi- dates are meeting every day. The eld Liberal will certainly b2 heard from when the ballots are counted. EEE THE HALIFAX EXHIBITION. Messrs, Haszard ard Chilton Capture Prizes.
