July 19 -- (CP) - Blonde Laurent Dauthullle of France tonight emerged as a strong possibility to meet cham- pion Jake 1..aMotta for the world's middleweight crown when he chill- ed Tuzo Portuguez of Costa Rica at. 1:08 of the third round of their 10-heat battle at Montreal's base- ball stadium. Dauthuille weighed 158 1-2, Portuguez 161. The latter was 2 1-: pounds over the middleweight limit. Dauthuille, 26. started at A slow pace but suddenly opened up with a barrage of rights and left: in the third round. Portuguez hit the canvas for an eight-count. after taking a right- hand punch. He was unable to weather DIuthuille's next storm. The quick and was a surprise to the estimated 10.000 .. sons in the stands who were settling down for a long-drawn-out battle. There wls little to choose in the first two rounds. I i 1 falls to happen. In in Is- land Physical Fitness Baseball League competition. there hasn't been a tie game. and then, presto. there are two of them in one day. But it is a good sign. it means that the competition is get- ting really keen, and that is what both players and fans like to see. particularly the latter. 0 0 I 0 It never nearly five weeks of play In the first game of a double- header between Falcons and Cur- ran and Briggs at Memorial Field, the latter took a close 4-3 dc- cision from the Falcons, but it was an even closer battle in the second game. with the teams dead- locked at five runs apiece when darkness closed down the game at the end of seven innings of play. That vvas.ih.e first one. . The second was witnessed at Summcrside airport when R. C, A, F. Royals came up with a big five- run rally in the sith inning to turn a 6-1 game for Abbles into a 6-6 deadlock at the end of that time. Although waging a bitter battle for the remaining three innings. neither team could push across the winning run for a clean victory. . The overall results. however. still leaves the C. and B. nine from the Western Capital in nos- session of the league leadership with eight wins, one 11355 and n tie, Falcons second with five wins. three losses and a tie. Abhies third with two wins. five losses and a tie. and Royals in the cellarl wltin one victory. seven losses and a te. Two local boxers. Harry Poul- ion, island welterweight champ- ion, and Carl "Beau Jack" Mac- Donald. who have been getting in a lot of bouts of late both locally and on the mainland, and winning their share of victories too, will both appear on mainland fight cards within the next week. Both boys will take part on the Roger Whynotf-Arnold Fleiger card at Sprinshlll. N.S.. this Saturday night and will fight again on a card next Wednesday at Saint John. N. B. O 0 Poulton will meet Austin Brown of Joggins. N. S.. as the semi-final attraction on Saturday night while Beau Jack will swap punches with Bobby Nixon oi Amherst in the leading preliminary event. The latter bout. should be a keen match. both boys having fought to a draw decision just about a week ago at Springhlll. Poulton's op- ponent. Brown, is also an aggres- sive Maritime middleweight and ought .10 make a good match for the local champ. In the Saint John bout next week. Poulton will also be featured in the semi-final go against Howard Leslie of thatclty. while Beau Jack's opponent has not been named as yet. 0 O C What happens when an infielder juggles the ball on a touch play? Here is the situation and answer as Billy Evans sees it in his "Knotty Problems of Baseball." "There was a runner on first base. On the first pitch he attempted a theft of second. Despite the fact that the runner. a fast man. got a running lead, a perfect throw by the catcher appeared to have him out at second by a comfortable margins "In receiving the throw from the catcher. the second baseman touched the runner out by at least a foot as he slid into second. Contact with the runner was such that it caused the infielder to jug- gle the ball as he made the touch. While the juggling act was going on. the runner reached second base. The umpire first ruled the runner out, then suddenly revers- ed himself. calling the runner safe. He heldgto the dual decision-cafe. was the runner out or safe? 0 O O "The umpire's final ruling-safe -wu correct. Had the second baseman not juggled the ball. the first decision of "out" would have been correct. However, when the player juggled the ball after the touch, he voided the original rul- ing. unleu able to again touch the runner with the ball before he reached the bus. in all touch pllyl, the ball must be firmly held by the fielder after touching the runner. The ball cannot be ing- gled on touch playo. even if the milder ultimately . . ' poms- aion of the ball and prevents same from dropping to the ground." Score The Curran and Briggs baseball team last. night came from behind twice in a. doubleheader with the Falcons to gain a win and a tie to solidify their first place position in the Island Baseball League. The score for the first game was 4-3 and the second was a 5-all tie. Both games were played on the Memorial Field diamond before small crowds. . In the first game the starting pitchers were Bob st. Pierre and Jack "Lefty" MacAleer. Pierre was relieved in the eighth inning by Alan Stewart who received credit for the win. The C. and B. team opened the scoring in the top half of the sixth when Bobby Tlmmins smashed I long home run to left centre with one man aboard to give his team a two to nothing lead. In the bot- tom half of the seventh the Fal- cons tied it up when two singles. a walk, a fielder's choice and a fly ball countered a brace of tallies. The C. and 13. team scored the next run in the top half of the eighth on a walk and a. brace of errors. Three errors were combined by the Falcons for their tying run in the home half of the eighth but it was to no avail as the winners tallied their winning marker in the top half of the ninth on a walk, a sacrifice and a single combined with an error. SECOND GAME In the second game both teams battled to a stalemate. C. and 8. opened with a brace in the top of the first on two hits, a walk. a sacrifice and a fielder's choice. The Falcons tied it up on two hit. bat- ters and a triple. The Falcons went. to the front on Moe Goodwin's home run into left field with two aboard in the home half of the second. In the top half of the sev- enth and last inning the C. and 13. team came on to score three runs on three hits and an error. Alan Stewart and Gerald "Lee" Bernard shared the mound duties for the Curran and Briggs team while Ev Beagan went the route for the locals.
