eg) eas ; -_ : SS ae: Be eget ac ae fom Brown’s Great Base Ball Hit. { at J. BR, Maedonald’s Boot Store. CF f Pittsburg, Pa., Dispatch.) Philip’s bot tailed yellow completed a few innocent Llorace dog. had just capers about the end of the grand stund | Londen House, on the afternoon of the 6th inst., and the sun had just beamed forth mountain of wintry cloud, when ‘Tom Brown of the Alleghanies, a distant re lative of the martyr of Harper's Ferry, walked up to the plate to face the pitcher of the Cin innatis. The score stood 4 to 2 in tavor ot the Rhivelao- ders, und the crowd was rather solemo. Tne big end of the great star battery spat upon its hands with dignity and precision, elevated its, right shoulder slichtly, caressed the sphere vatly, and then let go. The next in stant lengthy Tom Brown did likewise, and by his letting go a mighty crash resulted, and the ball took up its distant flight. Corkhill, in right field, instinctively tarted backward, and then stopped short and stood looking upward, as if rooted to the grouud, Suddenly it struck the crowd that the ball was go-| ing over the fence, and the 2,700 people rose to their feet and yelled and shriek- ed and shouted, waved their hats and repeated the chorus of whoops and yells and shrieks, and did it again and again and again, until long after Tom Brown had circled the bases, chasing in two ruos, and laid down to regain his breath. Just how far the bal! went, will never be known, but it took a runner from the outside five minutes to bring it back close enough to the fence to tield it tothe grounds. It was certainly one of the longest hits on record, and it won the game after all looked lost. The ball went high above a distant fence, and a youth who was on a neighboring telegraph pole told Horace in the even- ing that when it passed him, it was attired ina new summer suit, linen duster, snd wore side whiskers. =e. Another Ironclad for Russia. lt is proposed to construct a new ironclad (the fourth) at Nicolaieff, Russia, destined for the defence of the Black Sea coasts. Itis to be of steel and iron, the under portion being cased in wood. ‘The centre portion will be armored; for the defence of the engines and machinery a portion of the deck will be covered with armor plates two inches thick. With engines of 8,006 horse power indicated, the speed of this new ironclad will reach,it is hoped, sixteen knots. The armament is to be twelve-inch guns, firing en barbette from a couple of turrets on the upper deck. The estimated cost is 4,000,000 roubles,or in round numbers, £400,000. ‘The machinery, ete., will be furnished by the Baltic faetory. dpetinnanntitnntiterns A Gallant Deed of Arms.
