Phe excellent showing he wasable to make i@ a subject in respect to which the country at latge ia to be congratulated. ‘There can ba no doubt that while there has been duil- ness of trade—due to incal causes —in some localities, the general prosperity of Canada has been well maintained, in spite of the great commercial depression of Europe, the McKinley bill, and the everlasting whine of the Grits. The recent Ministerial delega- tion to Washington seems to have been useful io that itdrew from Mr. Blaine the declaration that the terms of reciprocily Bishop kindly consented to allow its cele- bration by the members of St. Joseph's Sodality to be postponed antil to-day. The celebration was held in St. Joaeph’s Con- vent, as usual, and was conducted on a graniseale. The altars in the pretty little chapel of the Convent were artistically de- corated with natural tlowera and tapers, presenting # beavtiful appearance. The attendance of members of the Sodality was very large. The celebration began with Mansa for the children at six o'clock, the officiating clergyman being the Rev. D. B. Reid. At this service about one hundred children received Holy Communion. The singing by the little ones was beautiful. Immed- iately after this service the members of the Sodality repaired in s bedy to the chapel where Mass was celebrated by Rev. J. C MeLean, who came all the way from St. Margaret's to assist at the Feast. At this Mass the members of the Sodality received Holy Communion. The singing was by the Sodality choir, and was excellent The rev. lady-in-charge isto he congratu- No doubt he expects to receive the everlasting gratitude of the citizens for erlaging this defect to the notice of the Fire Insurance companies. Does he know whether there isany water ia it at present or not? If so, I would like him to define the term ‘‘useless” aa used by him. Ti what Mr. Hughes says is correct, the citizens may expect at any date an increase on insur- ance rates. If you are as well posted on the water management as you protees to be, you can, no doubt, give us a good deal of valuable information, from the last annual report of the Water Commissioners, we \earn that the systems is in « thoroughly good condition, therefore we may expect sometiing luminous uader Mr. Hughes’ management of the Water Department.
