Around The Armouries The citizen soldier s rapidly as- suming an important place in the community, and in the defence plans of his country. a Hero on the Island there are several hundred men who regularly don their uniforms for the weekly training nights. The men come from widely scattered points ung- ing from summerside to Souris and Montleue. with units located in all three places. All of them train hard as they work for their promotions. Most of them are lcoking forward to the day when they can put up one. two or three 'hoolss', and take their place with the other non corri- mlssioned officers. Many more are striving for commissions and at present there are several officer cadets attached to different units. Last week the biggest single event of importance was the semi- annual meeting the Garrison Non Commissioned Officers Mess. Twice each year the Mess members meet: for the purpose of electing their mess officers for the coming six months. President for the past. term was W0 2 Henry J. Gallant. With a host of friends both in civilian and army llie proved a popular of- fice holder, Sgt. Maj. Gallant has been suc- ceeded as a result of the election held last week, by W0 2 Warren Farrah. Sgt. Maj. Farrah is also personally pcpular and is especially well liked by members or the Mess. With him, acting as vice president for the coming half-year. will be B.S..Vl. Carl Prowse. other officers elected were secretary Sgt. J. A. Pe- ters and treasurer T. Q. M. S. Clif- ford Orford. The Mess also named its new committee chairman who in turned selected the members tthey wished to serve with them. Re-elected un- animously to head the Entertain- ment Committee was Staff Sgt. Charlie Ryan. This was a tribute to the splendid work of his com- mittee in arranging the recent high- ly successful Mess dinner and dance at Sandy's. S.Q.M S. Ryan selected as fellow members Brd. A. P. West- ergaard. Cpl. Red Darte and W02 H. J. Gallant. I-leading the important House Committee is Sgt. Bob King. Sgt. King served on the last committee under the chairmanship of Sgt. Ernie Fardy and the committee was largely responsible for the new Mess quarters, The new Mess is a. credit to the energy and initiative of those responsible for it. and is considered now to be one of the finest Reserve Army N. C. 0's Messrs in Eastern Canada. Elected to the chairmanship of the Ways and Means Committee was Sgt. Ralph Small -who chose fcr his helpers Cpl, George Orford, Bdr. Henry Doucette and Sgt. J. A. Gallant. , One pleasant feature of this par- tlcular N. C. 0'5 Mess is the grac- lousness of the members as exempli- fied in their wholehearted wel- come to all amputees. It makes no difference if the man who lost a limb in service was a non-commis- sloned officer or a- private.vHe is welcomed to the Mess and offered all the privileges of membership except voting at elections, At the present time the boys are thoroughly enjoying the pictures which were taken at the opening of the new Mess and at their annual Mess Dinner which was held at Sandy's. The excellent shots show all angles of the Mess and many views of the diners. A new note will be injected into the festive Yuletide season this veer. Membc a of the N. C. 0's Mess this year will stage a gigantic Christmas Party in the Mess for all the children of members. A book . is being prepared in which mem- bers enter the names. ages and sex of their children. The purpose of the register is to enable the Buying Committee to select Christmas gifts suitable to the age of the child, All the child- ren attending will be personally erected by Santa Claus on the af- ternoon nf the 17th and handed a well filled bag of candes and fruits as well as is wrapped gift with his or her name on it to lend s per- sonal touch.
