Tne experience of the manufacturers of the ‘‘Myrtle Navy” tobacco is a valuable lesson in political economy. Previous to their commencing that brand, the tobacco made of the finest Virginia leaf, was always held at fancy prices, and put up in some fancy style of manufacture. It was thought that only the rich would buy such tobacco, and at the old prices none but the rich could buy it. The makers of the ‘Myrtle Navy” resolved to strip the manufacture of the tobacco of all its fancy costs and put their profit at so low a rate that no competitor could possibly under- sell them with the same quality of article. From the very first, until now, their rate of profit has been a uniform percentage upon the cost. It is their enormous sales which make their low rate of profit a satisfactory ove in the aggregate, and also gives them their firm hold upon the market. eir success is an excellent lesson for manufacturers to study over. or M. P. P.—The M. P. P. Co., of Truro, have issued a compact little circular of testi-e monials received by them in praise of Malto Peptonized Porter. There can be no doubt now of the success of this wonderful medicine and as succéss is never achieved unless by sterling worth our readers may be certain that M. P. P. is a first class thing. To THE Pustic.—We have not been in business long enough to advertise a discount sale, nor have we any necessity to do 80, as our goods are all new and have been bought low for cash, and we have marked them at prices that do not require large discounts to make them sell. THE KINGS AND QUEENS OF THE TROTTING TURF | OF THE CENTURY. Trotting horses, by breeding, have improved with years both in speed and beauty. The first champion of the trotter was patriotically named Yankee, but his gait was never over a second taster than three minutes. Shave | were successors to the title, the record im- proving all the time. In 44 Lady Suffolk accomplished a mile in 2m. 26}s. The Lady was queen for several years. Tacomy followed, preceding Flora Temple, after whom came Dexter, who is still remembered by others besides horselovers and horsemen. Dexter’s successor was the handsome Gold- smith Maid. Budd Doble, who brought the present track queen ander the wire « record breaker, held the reins over the **Maid” in three heats better than 2m. 20s. at Buffalo in | ‘Jl. Her best mark was 214. She beat) Rarus when in her prime, but Rarus went her record three-quarters of a second better in '78 | Then came St. Julian and then the great! Maud 8, who reigned with the exception of one dav, when Jay Eye See, was king, from ‘79 to 91. Maud 8 brought the mar away | down to 208} Sunol’s performance of 2.08 stopped Maud’s career as queen, And) Badd Doble with a Boston horse performed a} similar act for Robert Bonner’s steed. : Following is a tabulated history of the lowering of the record : 1806, Yankee, 2.59; 1810, Boston Horse, 2.48}; 1830, Buster, 2 32; 1834, Edwin Forrest, 2 314; ' 1840, Dittlerman, 2.3056; 1844; Lady | Suffolk, 2.26}; 1853, Tacomy, 2 25}; 1856, | Flora Tempie, 2.24 14; 1859, Flora ‘em- ple, 2.193; 1867, Dexter, 2.17 1-2; 1874, Goldsmita Maid, 2 14; 1878, Rarus, 2.13} 1879, St. Jvlien, 2.127; 1880, Maud S, 2.10}, 1881, Maud 8, 2.10}; 1884, Jay Eye See, 2.10; 1884, Maad 8., 2 094; 1885, Mand S., 2.082; 1891, Sunol, 2.085; 1892, Nancy Hanks, 2.07}. An analysis of the mile furnishes some interesting facts. ‘The first quarter was timed in 314 second, or a 2.06 gait; the next quarter's record was 32}, a 2.09 clip, or, for the distance travelled, half‘a mile, 2.07 1-2. The third quarter was the slow- est, in 32#, showing a tull mile at that rate in 2 11, and an average of 32 1-6, or near- ly 2.09 for the whole distance. Then came the astonishing part cf the performance. In the face of a head wind the last quarter was done in 30}, a g.it of 2.03, and it was third quarters and bring the mark for the mile to the world’s record of 207}. It is safe to say that never was the last quarter of a mile, which was fast, under any circumstances trotted in such speed. It is the best demonstration of the staying qualities of the mare, especially when it is remembered that at this tre- mendous pace and with all the urging at Doble’s command, she never so much as lifted her feet for a skip, For convenience these quarters are set out in tabular form ; Total Quarter. Dexter was sired by the noble animal. Abdallah’s Alexander, a son of Hambletonian, sired Goldsmith Maid. St. Julien was sired by Volunteer, a son of Hambletonian, and another son, Harold, was the sire of Maud S. Jay Eye See was by Dictator, and Sunol by Electioneer, also sons. And Nancy Hanks was by Happy Medium, another. The dam of Nancy Hanks, Nancy Lee, was by Dictator. So all the champions were ‘‘ ones bred.”’ Dudd Doble’s feat at Chicago was the third of its kind. He drove Dexter to the record, and held the ribbons over Gold- smith Maid in her performance. But one time has Nancy Hanks ever been beaten, even in one heat of a race, and this was by Bonnie Wilmore. 4 Piracy and Murder. A strange story of piracy and murder in the Pacific is related by the London Times, ‘| upon the authority of the Japanese news- papers. A few months ago the schooner Undine, of 180 tons burden, owned, it is believed, by Mr. Crawford, of San Fran- cisco, sailed from that port for the South Sea Islands in command of a Captain Cas- tella. The vessel's complement consisted of the master, mate, five men before the mast, a supercargo, and the steward, all shipped at San Francisco. The vessel touched at Honolulu, and while lying there a man Called on board and asked leave to accempany the cruiser to the Soath Seas. He announced himself *as the brother of the mate, and his request was, therefore, readily granted. About two days out from Honolulu one of thetwo brothers shot the captain in cold blood in his cabin, and the same fate befel the supercargo on his go- ing below to discover the trouble. The rest of the men were then called aft, and, it is said, were plied with poisoned liquor. All were made away with by the two brothers, excepting the steward, who is said to have been offered a bribe of $1,000 to keep silence, the men further thresten- ing him with death if he revealed the hor- rible tale. Touching at anisland, a crew of natives were shipped to take the pluce of the murdered men, and the cruiser then proceeded to the Ascension Islands. ‘| A gilot was engaged to take the vessel into one of the harbors there, and to him the steward seems to have disclosed the details of the murder of the unfortunate Castella and his men. On getting ashore the pilot at once informed the authorities, the vessel was boarded by soldiers and the twu pirate brothers arrested and placed in irons, being afterwards conveyed to Man- ila in one of the Government mail boats. It is currently reported and believed in the islands that this is not the only case of the kind which kas recentiy occurred there. Now is your chance to buy to dress your boys cheap.
