The theaters are the very places to study the Japanese. In many theaters the entire house is divided by rails into square pens 4 by 4 feet, intend- ed for four Japanese, but often con- taining half a dozen. The men and women are barefoot, walk the narrow dividing rails to reach their reserved “seats.” The patrons kneel within these square pens, or, when there are no pens, they squat upon the floor in little circular groups and smoke, eat, drink, fan themselves and chatter. | Many come in and go out at random. Children run to and fre. Frequently the spectators bring luncheon and pass the day within the theater, the play continuing uninterruptedly. The stage, which in some theaters revolves to change scenes, has two de- tached projections three feet wide, ex- tending among the audience. Upon these projections the performers run, reciting and acting. Their acting is sufficiently curious. A villain slain walks off the stage, a Jap mops with a dirty cloth the chief actor’s face while he is speaking. The prompter, dressed all in black, gown, hood and girdle, will follow the actor all around the stage. Other persons, also in black, run to and fro across the stage. Those costumed in black are supposed to be invisible. Stage car- penters and helpers often stand upon the stage and gaze and laugh at the actors, and so on If there is a history of weak lungs in your family, take Scott’s Emulsion. The Dacking Stool In England. It is interesting to conjure up a pie- ture of a “ducking” as practiced in England at the end of the eighteenth century. When the “scold” had been properly tried and convicted, she was escorted j by a crowd of her neighbors—in fact, by the whole village—to the nearest pond—and the greener and slimier the pond the better. A long plank was produced, at one end of which was the “ducking stool,” and in this the scream- ing, struggling victim was securely pin- foned. The chair end of the plank was then pushed far over the edge of the pond, and at a signal it was tilted deep into the green ooze until the scold was com- pletely immersed. When the dripping, half drowned woman was raised to the surface again, to the jeers and laughter of the onlookers, it can be imagined that her tongue wagged to some purpose. After a second dose she emerged more sub- dued, and after a third or fourth she was as penitent a woman as the vil- lage contained and was allowed to proceed home a sadder and wiser wo- man—until the next time. — London Tit-Bits.
