To-xoanow morning in the police court, Richard Farquhai-sou, Iouis Wheat and Wallace Knight will answer to a charge of disorderly conduct. One day last week these three got on a spree. They drove around town at a furious rate and then started for the country. Here they came to grief. They are charged with assault- ing a farmers wife, breaking his furniture and windows. Sergt. Bradley was put on the tract and had them arrested. Such conduct is disgraceful. Under Mr. Munn’s supervision the log house, erected for the celebration of the pioneer feature at the gathering of -the clans on Wednesday next, is now completed. The walls are formed of logs about 7 inches indismeter, rough and undressed, laid horizontally andcrcssiugeachotherat each cornerof the building, where th notched about half throng to allow each log to touch the one immediately below it. The chinks are filled in with moss. The roof is formed of lighter material and covered with bark of the tree in large unbroken pieces, and se- cured by poles tied down with birch gads. It certainly presents an antiquated ap- pearance. (Montreal Star.) A serpent, and especially a venomous one. on board a ship is calculated to rather try the nerves of the seamen, and this the sailors on the ship Theodore H. Rand discovered when, one fine day during their voyage from Iloilo to Mon- treal, they were made aware that a vicioussnake. seven feet in length, had possession of the deck and proceeded to make things lively on board. How this snake came on board the Theodore H. Band is a mystery. Its presence was first discovered by the man at the wheel when the snake made adart for him The steerman called out lustily, and some of the crew coming on the po~-p deck where the snake held high carnival were in turn attacked by the rep- tile. The men had to move about lively to get out of its way, as it made very rapid lunges, darting a dis- tance of fully seven feet at ”a jump. The while, when finally it was killed by the captain, who succeeded in cutting off it- head with an axe. The snake was a long slender water-snake, beautifully marked, and is said to be so venomous, that a bits. from it to one of its‘own species will cause death. It is thought the serpent was washed on board by a‘ wave. It is a most unusual occurrence to have such a passenger put on board in this manner. nor is it usual to see such serpents so far south. Around Calcutta water snakes are often noticed swimming around the ship. The “Theodore H. Rand" snake, however, now occupies a prominent place in the cabin. It is stufled with oakum and is-no longer an object of terror. The Theodore H. Rand left Iloilo for Montreal on March 8 last. She experi- enced a hurricane while ofi the Cape of Good Hope. The wind and waves were terrible. It was during this storm that the snake is supposed to ‘have been washed on board. . : Relief for St. J ohu’s The following contributions have been received since our last issue: Bay View—Walter Simpson, 21: bush potatoes; John Dickieson, 4; bush pota- toes; Johu C Clarke, 200 lbs flour.
