From the king on the throne, from the peas- ant who toils, From the lawyer who pleada in his choler, From the client who waits for his share in the spoils, Comes the cry of the crowd for the Dollar, As it ever has been, as it ever shall be, While the heart to the head is a scholar, The Grindeme and Grundys by Nature's de- cree, Shall worship the almighty Dollar. A round bitof gold! That's all! Yet Im told That the world is built up by its glisten- ing! That the ching-a-ling-ling of this idol{fso old Brought the devil to stand at his christep- ing. John Whiicomb Riley. at _ “~—o-m + — a Training Will Tell. In the minor moralities the principle of careful early training holds good. The politeness that isnoew styled old- fashioned might be reintrodueed with benefit to those who practised it and to those who are favored in* receiving it. The graceful deference to elders and to women is something that is rarely acquired in mature years. A boy of five is none too young to be taught to pull off his cap when he meets an acquaintance, to remain uncovered in the presence of ladies, to step aside to allow them to enter or leave a room first, and to remain standiog till they are seated. There is an ease of bearing gained by early drilling in these re- garde that makes unmistakable the difference between the man _ whose courtesy is ingrain and the cne with whom it is a veneering, no matter how skillfully the latter may have been ap- plied. The table manners of children can- not receive too close attention, and yet they seldom have adequate cure be- stowed gpon them. The constant, re proof and admonition required seem but a thankless task for many years. Boys and girls manifest a terrible ingenuity in acquiring awkward habits and un- pleasant tricks, and an equal slowness in overcoming them. Perpetual “nag- ging” is always painful, both to the giver and the object, but the recom- peuse of grateful appreciation comes surely, though slowly. Some parents weary of waiting tor it and abandon the efforts at training. To men nothing can make up for the lack of this early discipline. Womee, more imita- tive and less transparent in jimita- tion, may tutor themselves into a pretence of ease, but a man rarely sufti- ciently overcomes his self-consciousness to feel otherwise than miserable in a cirele where he knows his habits and manner mark him as of.less outward refinement than his associates. ’ Once ina great while the wife of a man may succeed in imparting a polish that transforms the rough article into a tolerable counterfeit of the fine one, but it is at the piece , of long . struggles and bitter mortifications alike to husband and wife. It is gin the mother’s hand that the power is laid, and with her rests the responsibility if she fails to exercise it aright. New Way to Pay Old Debts. “It’s a terrible thing to owe money,” said Smith. ‘To be compelled to dodge around this corner and that to avoid meeting acreditor onthe street. It takes the manhood ont of one, and he soon loses all self-respect. I am very glad to say that I no longer owe a dol- lar,” “Then those old debts that have bothered you so long are all squared up, are they ?” “Yes, thank heaven ! The last one be- came outlawed yesterday.” i. _—— —<Se _ Easter. The Easter festival falis this year on the 25th of April—the latest day on which it can possibly fall. It has not occurred before on that date during the present century, and it will not: happen again till the year 1943. The earliest day on which Easter can fall is on the 22nd of March, and it will not occur on that date till the year 2.000. In fact, the festival only falls on its earliest and latest limits about once in a century. oe Different Views of Life. Wife—You shoulden’t take such a morbid view of life, my dear.
