It resembles a glazed stone. but act- ually is clay and sand, the quartz Georgetown council of which has been itusea by e I electric cur-ren orm Two weeks ago this locality was visited by a rain storm which froze on the lines. until there were tons of weight of ice on the lines. Before the end of the day lines throughout the whole district were falling. so that Montague was soon without electric and 'telephone communications. The first break occurred on the lsparrows Road. and on arriving lat the scene Mr, Clements and his crew found electric wires on the ground. In one spot the cur- rent had proved sufficiently strong to fuse the quartz in the sand to give the area a glazed ap- pearance of glass. He. however, stressed the fact that the first impresions on the child are given in the home, and the parents must be fully aware of their great responsibility, so that theyoungboy or girl who comesto school at the age of six has been instilled with the proper ideee of good behaviour and cooperative as- sociation with his or her playmates. with this as a basis, the teacher's work is now to develop the stud- ent: physically, mentally. spiritually, and socially. Dr. Shaw went on to describe the famous folk schools in Denmark which he had visited on his trip to that country. He explained that in these schools the students were taught an objective view towards life. with emphasis placed on the physical. mental. spiritual, and so- cial development. a concept which has brought great. changes in the young boys of Denmark. which has helped to make it: the great country it is today. He stated that the attendance of the school children of P. 12.1. has risen to over 82 percent. and with such a large at ' present new is the time to instill in these students the principles of citizen- ship, a factor which could be great- iy assisted by the Home and School Association, which had the facil- ities ofi bringing together ths,par- ents and teachers to solve mutual problems affecting the child. so that he would grow into a helpful citizen of the future. The next speaker was Mr. S. 8. Hessian. K. C.. a school trustee. who outlined the present eon- dltlons in the Montague School. and stressed the need of a new school to give more space for future development and the pos- slble inclusion of more grades. He stated that at present there are three mcoms in operation in the basement of the school, a condit- ion which does not deserve the highest compliments. as such con- ditions must affect the mental outlook and retard the proper de- velopment of the child. It is nec- essary to rectify these conditions as rapidly as possible. Mr. Hessian -felt that e new school would be the answer to the problem, and the acquisition of the necessary mon- iea should pruent no insurmount- able difficulty. At the conclusion of his remarks. Mr. Hessian moved a hearty vote of appreciation to Dr. shew. which Charles Dr. A.D. Maolcenzle also epokel briefly" regarding the subject of home and school-influence on the citlaens of tomorrow. That the present number of years training -for teacher! was not lulfideat and advocated anothu your at. P.W. college. This principle was encore- ed by Dr. Shaw. who felt that this had been a requirement for some years.
