Yours truly, D. FARQUBARSON, per W. H. C., SOuTHPORT, Nov. 24, 1900. Hon. D. Farqubarsen: DEAR Str,— Yourreply to my note of a recent date received. I must say that I was never told thatthe pay- ment which I received ‘‘ was volun- tary on the part of the Government -that they did not owe me any- thing.”’ Now, I was under the impression that the material was in the possession of the Govern- ment, and that as an honest Govy- ernment they would pay for it. You say Mr. Lowe never received anything. I never thought he did ; that according to your interview published in the Guardian of No- vember 27, 1899, the Government offered to settle with Mr. Lowe and pay him for the material at full invoice prices, also to pay truckage the time the material remained on the ground. Secing that the Government were good enough to make Mr. Lowe this offer, why do they withkeld 15 per cent. from me ? Ouranswer is (1) that the attack was not worth noticing, (2) that having farmers’ meetings and other important mat- ters to attend to we hadn't time to notice it, (2) that Mr. Paton doesn't need any defence. Good wine needs no bush;anda man such as Mr. Paton does not re- quire much to be said on his behalf. Everyone knows Mr. Paton for a thrifty, caany Scotsman, who has achieved success as a man of busi- ness, and at thesame time taken an active interest in the welfare of the community in which his interest is bound up; and every one knows that justsuch men as he are most of all neected im the public service of this Province at the present junc- ture. i } As to temperance and prohibition, ‘it is really wonderful that The | Patriot shou'd have challenged com- parisons between the conduct of Mr. 'Patonand that of Premier Farqu- | harson. ho can say that Mr. | Paton has ever been, in the slighest 'degree, inconsistent in that regard; jand who cin say that Premier Far- | quharson has not acted the: hypo- Premier Farqu- harson pretended to be a great pro- t Bb i | hibitionist, | the ring-bolt by his party, and com. PATON AND THE PRE.. UNFULFILLED PROMISES’ A Liberal Farmer Scores the Government. Sir,---As we are now on the verge of a general election it may not be amiss to review briefly some of the promises made by tke Liberal party on previous occasions, also some of their acts. In the year 1893 the chief ques- tion brought forward was that of taxation. Mr. Peters de- clared that owing to the probability of our having our claims at Ottawa adjusted taxation was away in the dim and distant future—indeed we would, in all probability, never re- quire to levy taxes at all. He also declared that in the eyent of his party having the Government: he would consult the people before levy- ing taves. His party was elected, and a few monthsafter he and a lot of his boon companions went to Mount Stewart and told the people that he was going to tax them. In 1897 the question was again that of revenue. This time the bait was held out in a different form. He had the assurance ofa favorable consideration of our claims and we were to have an arbitration with the Ottawa Government con- cerning them and taxation was to be swept away forever. known to all that Mr. Peters win on this cry, and immediately started for British Columbia!
