Itoarls. ldolflllhl. llll; hy Americas Pls amoaiatlonl Tho money gathered to repair tha house of the Lord recalls the method adopted oo obtain mossy in the days of King Jahoaah and the priest Jsholada-~ a chant beaids the altar, with a hols in - tho ild°ot lt,~'and It worked lpleadldly _ and brought in much money. I doubt not but that a proper appreciation of the altar (tho cross ol Christ) today would bring an abundance for tha Lord'a hours. I have aeea a box with a hols lu the lid to receive thank offer- ings from grateful hearts to help give the gospel to tha heathen and thus aid in completing the house-tha church- accompllsh great things. But I have ` soon a similar box placed to receive of- ferlngsi for .other purposes accomplish next to nothing. Iiiaoh of those boxes was in a church, but the altar and tba object made all the difference. When the love of Christ constrains there is no lark. When any ons does the best ha knows for God, as Josiah was evident ly doing, God will find a way to reveal Himself more fully to auch a ons, and in this case Ho caused tha priest Hi)- klnh to find the bool of the law, whlda some think was the original book of which we read in Dent. xxxi, 20-28. The priest gave the book to the acrlhe, who read it and then took it to the king and read it to him. with the result that the king when ho heard it rent his clothes in token of his acceptance of and submission to the message and his grief that the lavr had been so sat at naught. The king at once sends for further light to one .who is qualified to ex- plain the law more fully, and Uuldah, the prophctcss, who dwelt In Jerusa- lem, is consulted (versa 22). Jeremiah had at this time been a prophet about ilve years (compare verse 8 and Jer. l, I, 2), and why he was not consulted I do not know unless it happened that he was at his homo in Anathoth and Bulduh was right there in Jerusalem and the matter required immediate light. There were doubtless many mon of lniiuenco and importance in Jo- rnsnlem, but some ons has said that I woman knowing God's will is far au~ perlor to a man who docsn't. Josiah had hoard the curses of Dent. xxvlii, 15-20; xxx, 17, 18, ste.. and know that the wrath of God was hanging over them because of the slna oi' the nation and now earnestly desired de- liverance for himself and his people if such could be obtained. Tho word of God la very plain concerning ovary un- heliever that the wrath of God is upon him (John lil, 18, B8; Gul. iii, 10; Jas. ii, 10), but how few seam to believe it or tremble at tho word of God na King Josiah did. Yo! only with such as tremble ut His word docs God dwell (Isa. lvii. 15; lxvl, 2, 5). A good prac- tical word for many today ls found in Job xxxvl, 18, "Because there is wrath hownrs lest Hs tsko thee away with His stroke: then s great ramson can- not deliver thee." Tho prophetesa has no answer from herself, ua many seem now to have, but she has a "Thus aalth tho Lord God of Israel" (verses 23, 24), the New Testa- ment equivalent of which ls, “Verily I any unto you." Happy indeed are all who rccelve such messages meekly and proceed promptly to give heed to them. God said to Moses concerning Christ, “I will put my words in His month, and Ile shall speak unto them all that I shall command Him" (Dent. xvlil, 18). Ho snld the same thing to Jere- miah concerning Himself in Jer. i, 7-9. and believers now can trust Illm to fulfill to them His word to Moses, "Now therefore go, and I will be with thy mouth and tciich thee what thou ahnlt say" (Ex. iv, 12), provided that they have His message ln them. Tha Lord's messago as given in the rest of the lesson had no comfort for the persistently rebellious; it never has. But thorn was much comfort for Josiah and for all who would turn to the Lord with him, and tlierefore Josl- ah sought to tum the people to God that they might eacnpo the impending iudgmonts, and many did turn to tho Lord with him, as we road in verses Si, 32. God's aim is always to bring men to repentance that they may not perish (ll Pct. ill, 9), and this is seen in the last awful judgments of the great trlbulntlon, where wo read again and again that they repented not (Rev. ix, 20, 21; xvl, 0, 11). Josiah in that ssmo year kept the greatest passovor that had been kept slnco the days of Samuel (xxxv, I8, I9), but the rovival wus only temporary. The hearts of tho people were away from God, and the time camo when ovon auch men as Moses and Samuel or Noah, Daniel and Joh could not do- Iiver the nation by their righteousness or their lat:-rccssion (Jer. xv, I; Ezek. xlv, I4). Consider in Job xxxlli, I4-30, how God labors to deliver man from the pit, und lotus bo encouraged to por- aeveru by John vi, 37. Then when wa have lovingly and patiently dons all, If men will not repent, we have deliv- erod our own souls (Esek. xxxlll, 9). 'nie manner of .1oslah'a death (xxxv, 22, 24) has in lt something very sup- goatlvo and searching. It was the will of God that hs should die peacefully when his time camo, but by his willful- ness he fell in battle. Seo verse 28 and chapter xxxv, 22-24. By disobedience and self will wa bring many things upon ourselves which by obedlenca and denial of self we might have oscapod. It ls probable that Paul might have saved himself much suffering at Jeru- salem If he had been as obedient to tho heavenly vlalon at tho close as st tho beginning of his mmm, _ _____ _ __ Bariers’ looltstoro Is Iioadigual-tors for louiisn- Ira o Prlnos Edward la- t _ IIE - Is iir-WW ames aton F0. o ._ll» OVE B the Kind we Sell. \PMl\MRMMAAMFlAMMMMMMMMMMMRMMAF\l§; -r ' I ._ .,_ _Y ____ __,*_____ __ ..,,_ ._ _.|517 SI Till Sunil Xnuuitl Coilvcutioii of ilic Iii " fol vcr (Suulli) on Motuliiy, Aug lli-li.
