But it is known that an appalling disaster has befall the city of Galveston, where it is reported a thousand or more lives have been blotted out and tremenr duus property damages have beea in» curred. The estimate made by the citizens of Galveston was that four thousand houses, most of them residences,had been destroy - ed and that at least one thouaand people had been drowned, killed or are missing. The city is acomplete wreck. Most of the sailing crafte were wrecked. They were cither piled upon the wharves or are floating, bottom side up, in the bay.
